Okay, i am relatively new to production and i was wondering if anyone out there has pointers on how to get tribal drum sounds. Not just the instruments used but also the structure and what sequences work well. If anyone has info or samples it would be really helpful!
Thanks in advance |

are you using reason? |

Reason or FL Studio, I've got both. Working with FL currently. |

ok, well I use reason, so I can tell you how I do it.
Load up a fresh redrum. load all the sounds seperately, the most common tribal bongos and congas are in the xclusive drums-sorted > 08_percussion-other folder.
Just pick a nice assortment of sounds. Also, be sure you have a kick on a seperate redrum. This way you can add effects to the tribal drums without effecting the kick.
Play the kick on the seperate redrum, and play the tribal drums redrum, so you can hear them both, and just start putting in some congos, bongos, whatever in realtime. If you just fool around with the placement you can usually come up with a pretty effective rhythm. There is not one specific way to sequence the drums. I usally have about 4 sounds on this one redrum.. the sounds that I want to dominate in the percussion.
I'll assume you have reason 2.5 for the next step. Create a RV7000 advanced reverb unit on the redrum. Turn down the Dry-Wet to about 30. Click the remote programmer arrow. Turn the algorithum until you reach echo. Turn on the tempo sync. For the echo time, usually 3/16 works nicely, you can try 2/16 for another nice effect.
Ok so now you have a basic tribal rhythm going with a nice kick.
Next, I usually had a secondary redrum. So put in a new one, use the same sample folder, but this time place the drums alittle closer together, and lower the volume abit. Add another RV7000, you can use the same settings, or differnt, just play around until you get something sounding good. Add a unison to this redrum, 16 voice, but take the dry/wet to about 50. this just makes them alittle more recessed sounding, and cuts off part of their sharpness.
Last step is to add some highhats and stuff. Use the 07_percussion-hi folder aswell as the 05_hihats folder. good stuff in both. I generally just throw in a hat on the off beat, and a shaker or something on the beat, then add a few other things in unusual places for good measure. I try to stay away from adding effects on my his, but you can do whatever sounds good to you. A tom on an offbeat also sounds good.
THis is just a basic rundown of what I usually do. Play around with it, and you'll get some good stuff happening. |
