Need help creating vocal effects

I want to start including vocals in a few of my tracks (the girlfriend's got a good voice ;) ). There are a few effects I'd like to use for the vocals and I'll try my best to describe them.

1.) When singing, as the vocalist changes pitch, it's almost as if you can set a tolerance to where the processed sound actually changes pitch. Like, when singing, what comes out only changes pitch in certain increments (only true notes or half-steps or something). There has to be a name for this effect but I'm not sure what it is. I wish I were at home where my music collection was so I could find some trance tracks that use this effect; the best I can come up with that uses this is Kid Rock- Only God Knows Why; Eiffel 65- Blue (da ba dee); if I can think of any more I'll add them.

2.) I can't really describe this one in words. I want to recreate something similar to the vocals in Carl Cox- Phuture 2000 (Deepsky Remix). Sounds like some of it is flanging but it's got added tones to it and such that I'd like to create. Hard to describe....

Any help is much appreciated!

For the pitch effect: It's called Auto-Tune if I'm not mistaken. You can do such thing with a vocoder. Correct me if I'm wrong..

That sounds right.

One way or another, a great place to start would be a Vocoder.

Are there any good software Vocoders?

I found the Native Instruments Vokator, sounds promising, especially for the second type of effect (I'm listening to examples off their website)

There is also Prosoniq Orange Vocoder.
