Inbetween the mix (what to do ?)

Lets say you can beat mix in 30 secs, andlets say you mix melodic trance only.

What's there to do inbetween the mix ?

I find myself pretending to look busy :tongue3

I use the example of melodic trance because this doesn't lean itself to cutting/scratching etc.

What suggestions can you give me to improve my set ?
DJ Nuclear
-drink beer
-make sly glances at the opposite sex
-use bathroom
-smoke cigarette
-have sex (as demonstrated by DJ tiesto)
-play with the buttons on the turntable or cd player so it looks like you are doing something technical

Hahaha top class answer. Btw did Tiesto have sex while one of his tracks was playing?

Yeah. He talked about it in an interview with Rolling Stone. He said he was kinda trashed at this one party and was DJing, and this girl came up and wanted sex...he said he got up from it to mix between tracks, then went back to it. :stongue:

He says he keep his sex and DJing seperate, now, though. ;)

haha yeah, those are good answers... but if you wanna be a good dj:

choose the next track you wanna mix in, maybe even start to plan out the next couple tracks.

play with the eq... esp if you are mixing trance, play with the mid/high levels during a build up

talk to the crowd... although this has nothing to do with djing it might be helpful... shows you 'care' and they might have some track requests

I put on delerium silence if i need to pee - full length version.

between tracks i generally talk to people, dance about, have a drink, talk to women or the light jock or my friends with me.
Sometimes ill be hunting for a tune or CD- but generally i know where it is and can cue it and find it pretty fast- i normally cue it before i chat or whatever.

i get bored

mix in my next tune early

and end up with a set of about 20 songs on 70min cd

i hate having nothing to do whilst mixing :D

Ditto :) I think it also makes for a better set not playing seven or eight minutes of a song...that gets old real fast.

That depends on what style you are spinning in my opinion. If I'm playing trance tunes that I love, there's no way I would want to mix out of them early because I'm bored... I like to play good tracks as a whole, anything else would be wrong.

get a third turntable and use a acapella :P

im full-time when i mix cause im always hammering the effects on my djm.. but even if you dont have a effects unit of some sort, you can still use EQ's to make interesting.

disagree.
two break downs gets tedious.
espesh for a crowd i think, too much hands in the air, "spirit fingers" for their liking. they'll get bored.
mix in after the first breakdown.
