just built a new pc, asus a7n8x deluxe mobo, amd athlon 2400+, corsair xms 512 mb, ati radeon 9000 128 mb...
everything worked fine until i went into the bios to find my cpu FSB set @ 200mhz, when it's supposed to be 133Mhz... setting the correct values, saving & exiting resulted into an unbootable system - everything powers up, ide/power leds light up but nothing happens at all, even no video out.
it's a widely-known issue (http://www.amdforums.com/showthread...15&pagenumber=1), bios corruption on settings save. many people have exchanged the same mobo, ordered from newegg.com too.
basically, my question is how should i go about the exchange. i'm rather concerned about the cpu / heatsink removal, because the manual says you're supposed to replace the thermal paste once you remove the heatsink... plus i'm scared i might chip the cpu or something... any advice? i'm balding here. |

Is that the NForce 2 chipset board? I just built a system three or four months ago with that, urghh... hopefully this doesn't happen to it.
Anyones, try clearing the CMOS like previous poster said. Their is a jumper that is set to off normally, all you have to do is switch it to on (don't turn on power) and then put it back in previous position and the CMOS is reset. If the bios image itself is corrupted your basically fxcked without sending it back unless you want to try a "hot flash". Since you are scared about taking a heatsink off I don't recommend you try that though... Thermal paste isn't an adhesive compound (unless you epoxied the ****** on, then, your ed) , it seperates very easily, just undo the clips and the heatsink will come right off, it's pretty tough to chip a core. I've been rough with cpus and never had it happen... bending a pin is pretty easy though, be sure to put it back in the little plastic case once you remove it. |

yeah, i've tried clearing the cmos jumper in 10 different ways.
yes, it's an nforce 2 chipset, the talking one. if only it could access the floppy..... |

| With some of the asus boards you can plug a PCI video card in and get it to post instead of the AGP. I've done that a couple times. Dosent matter how old the card is as long as it works. |

k. feck, decided to go with the seemingly easiest but not cheapest method - get a pre-programmed bios saviour. it'll be $60, shipped from sweden, plust it'll help in case i bork the bios in the future. REALLY hope it works because i don't wanna go through reinstalling the heatsink again (that cost me like a year of my life:D) plust don't wanna wait for the RMA to come through.
but, man, this new system was so ing sweet & fast while it worked.... |
