Agency Is Selling Land on the Moon
Mon Oct 13, 7:46 AM ET

MELBOURNE, Australia - Now here's a gift that's really out of this world. A new real estate agency, Lunar Realty, based in the southern Australian city of Melbourne, opens its doors Tuesday selling one-acre blocks on the moon for 59 Australian dollars (US$40) and 10-acre "lifestyle" blocks for A$298 (US$202).

Businessman Paul Jackson, 33, announced Monday he had bought the Australian rights to sell the land from Nevada-based entrepreneur Dennis Hope.

Hope has been cashing in since 1980 on what he said was an apparent loophole in the 1967 United Nations Outer Space Treaty that barred nations from laying claim to the moon but said nothing about individuals.

Hope registered a claim for the moon and planets with the United States, the Soviet government and the United Nations and, operating as Lunar Embassy, has been selling plots of extraterrestrial real estate ever since.

Jackson said two million people from 180 countries have bought a slice of the moon since 1980.

"I would be extremely happy if one day we got the chance to live on the moon," said Jackson, who has bought an acre of land for himself. "I look at the world around us and think stranger things have happened."

WTF!!, no one can own the ing moon...so wheres the price tag coming from...sheez.

Also another situation, say your in a deserted place meaning no advanced technology being use...why do you have to pay to own some part of the land that isn't being used...I mean no one owns earth to put a price tag on it...sure i can understand the price being put on land that has being gone through hard work...but land that no one has ever used...why in gods name do we have to pay for it...

Err it was originally an American who started the whole thing, it's just an Australian who took over.

This guy was on the Tom Green show a couple of months back. LoL, he said George Lucas & some other famous celebrities own parts of the moon and he gave Tom his own acre. He also went on to explain how it was legal for him to own the moon. The sad part is that he has made millions off of this "idea".

Well if that Aussie can own the Moon, I claim Uranus, who wants a peice?
1 acre of Uranus will cost 1000 bux
if you want all of Uranus it will be 500 million

OFFERS?

i also saw that tom green show with that guy who really believed that he owned the moon and was selling properties to people, pretty funny. My dad actually recieved a junk mail in his email offering to sell him land. As much as i love the aussies i don't think it originated there... :p

No it wasn't, it's clearly stated in the article above. Some Australians bought the company off of the original American creator Dennis Hope (the guy who was on Tom Green). I'm not sure who's more crazy though...Dennis Hope or the Australian company for purchasing it from him.

I still find it funny that Dennis Hope has made millions of dollars selling land plots though!
