Music Buildup?

I've just started my very first song in Reason 2.5 (very first serious track too :D).

I've been listening to some of my favourite songs, trying to figure out how to make mine build up properly. So far I've basically got a simple dance beat with the bassdrum muted fading in with a phaser applied to it. When it fades in, the bassdrum starts, and then claps and high hats etc.

So now I've got this wicked sick beat moving along, what next?! I continually have the temptation of just starting with the melody straight away without any buildup! From what i hear the thing to do is put some cool sound fx or basslines in, I had a go at this and found it pretty difficult to get it sounding decent. So basically I would like to know, what modules are generally used for this purpose? And what kind of effects should I be going for?

I appologize for the open-endedness or this question, I'm just finding this stage really difficult to come to terms with; I found developing the pads, melody, etc. all quite easy .

Thanks (heaps) in advance!

You should probably try posting this in the Music Production forums on TA .. there will be much more help available there :)

you have a phaser on the kick? that can't sound good... :conf:

kicks should always be mono ( with compression if you want, but it's recomended)...

a good percussion and base, is half work.. though i am still struggeling with the synths in a buildup..takes ALOT of time to figur it out, unless you have this gift, of making trance..

My advise is to try and keep trying..make, also listen to other tracks, i noticed for example. some producers, make 2 melodies or more(good example MK-S-Illuminate) that kinda fuse together in 1 killer lead, so what they do is take 1 lead, use it as buildup, and than comes the break, and fuse the other lead in the buildup one...

I just tend to gow ith thw flow...and try and make something I would like to hear myself! Thats the case with all elements in my tracks!

My best advice would be to listen to your favourite tracks and get ideas from them and then start to build on them!

I would say this my friend - make sure it feels natural. When you get that feeling in your stomach, or in your head, that says, 'THIS IS GREAT', then perhaps you are heading in the right direction. You gotta make sure you 100% sure of yourself. Confidence does wonders! ;) -Mental

Always remember - not every single track you make has to be uplifting, or powerful. It can be slow, relaxing, or chill-out depending on your mood.

Just keep working Massive84. I'm sure you'll find that 'sound' your looking for in due time! :D -Mental
