funnily enough mate, one is just harder sounding than the other. Tracks by Ferry, Armin, Tiesto, etc. are your normal trance/uplifting trance artists, and then your SHOKK, Flutlicht, DuMonde etc. are your more hard/hard uplifting trance artists. Check some of those out.

Hard trance is usually faster and has heavier basslines and harsher/dirtier sounding synths. Regular trance, in general, use softer, less aggressive sounds.

very damn true. first of all, some djs (armin, oakenfold) are by no means hard trance. some of their tracks may be remixed into a hard trance track, but thats another story. check out dj scot project, hennes & cold, cosmic gate, and maybe some james lawson, and alpha zone. that should get you started.
and yeah...

I agree with what's been previously posted but I thought I'd just point out that the aforementioned style is mainly for that of German Hard Trance which generally has a "heavier" bass. However there's also what's known as "UK Hard Trance" which bears little to no resembelance to the German stuff. Artists like K90, Jon The Dentist and Jon Doe are examples. This stuff isn't very "hard" on the bass at all usually but instead is generally slightly faster in BPM than the nor, and has large synths creating a very "energetic" feel. I like this style a lot, but I prefer to call i "Energy Trance". There's also the early "Hard Trance" from the years 1992-1996 which is usually very fast and often sounds somewhat acidic.
