I have a bone to pick I am afraid. Take a look at this website banner:
FIFA = The 'Football' worlds governing body. Notice FIFA = Federation Internationale de FOOTBALL Association. If it was FISA then yes it would be ok to call the most loved game in the world 'soccer':whip:. But as is it is highly recognised as Football across the world please refrain from using the word 'Soccer' as I find it highly offensive/sarcriligous/blasphemous:mad:. Thanks for your time, Rant over! :) |

I can forgive people from places like America and Australia when they say soccer, but when british people start calling it soccer it gets irritating.

Agreed.
Why is that only here in North America we call this great sport "SOCCER". It is Football and that's the end of it...it makes perfect sense...but foot and ball, but soccer, where did that come from? |

You wanted to know where soccer came from here you go (3 second search to find it):
| quote: |
Main Entry: soc·cer
Pronunciation: 'sä-k&r
Function: noun
Etymology: by shortening & alteration from association football
Date: 1889
: a game played on a field between two teams of 11 players each with the object to propel a round ball into the opponent's goal by kicking or by hitting it with any part of the body except the hands and arms -- called also association football |
So both sides of this argument (which I could really care less about) are butchering the proper name of the sport. There are many different games called football of some sort:
Association Football
Rugby Football
Gaelic Football
Australian Rules Football
American Football
Getting all worked up over this seems pointless to me. :thepirate
