If you had a load of money to spend on production equipment, say about £10k and you'd never produced before apart from sitting with someone watching. What equipment would you spend the money on ?
I've already decided on a MAC G5 running logic but can't decide what else to blow the cash on. |

| Seriosly, you should invest in a really good soundcard witch support surround and a surround set of monitors designed for music prod. Maybee some cool synths to... :) |

| Yeah £10,000. I'm starting an Audio Engineer degree in March so I want to buy various equipment. 1. for producing my own stuff and 2. for projects I will have for my degree (It will save me going in and out of college all the time) for this reason I want to buy hardware, not use all soft synths etc cause it will be more relevant to the stuff I'm learning. I've been given various opinions on what I should buy, just trying to get a few more :D |

A computer. Mac you say?
A Soft-Sequencer. Logic Perhaps.
Some fx, Waves bundle maybe ($)
Synth (up to you. Get a VA (virus) and a Wavetable(JV))
A good soundcard. Delta 10/10
High-end equipment is expensive and you'd be surprised how quickly 10k disappears. |

| well i would have suggested go with some software before hardware, but if you are getting an audio engineering degree...you can probably skip that heheheh....anyway, i would mostly get a solid ass computer... |

| Design |
Try the following:
-good quality nearfield monitors (this is most important)
-a mixer (there is tons of stuff out there, try TASCAM company)
-software compressor, equalizer, and ultramaximizer from Wave
-hardware synthesizer types depend on the type of music you will be producing. (start with YAMAHA Motif, ROLAND, KORG, NOVATION...)
Just a word of caution: you can't have a weak link in your production chain if you want good results, so you will need top quality equipment.
An example:
Several years ago I bought Behringer Truth monitors for mixing and mastering my tracks. It was always frustrating mixing the baseline and drums in all my material. In other words, I just couldn't hear the low frequencies. Then I switched to Dynaudio nearfields and it was like heaven. No problems, whatsoever, my mixes sound great virtually anywhere!
The price of Behringer monitors - US$400.00
The price of Dynaudio monitors - US$2000.00
Bottom line - if you can, invest in top quality equipment for best results. |
