Ryuichi Sakamoto : Japan's most influential and pioneer composer, started the Yellow Magic Orchestra back in the early 80's, then left and went solo.

Recommended:
1996 [album]
The Last Empreor OST
Wings of Homnasie OST
Coda [album]

Susumu Yokota : Techno/house producer, he has been doing alot of ambient/experimental stuff lately, very good, correct me if I'm wrong but he's album Sakura was a large inspiration for Charlie May while making Airdrawndagger.

[albums]
Sakura
The Grinning Cat
The Boy and a Tree

S.E.N.S. : New age, classical, instrumental duo. If any of you have seen HK/Japanese/Korean TV drama's in your life, you've probably heard their tracks before. They produce heaps of instrumental soundtracks for movies/TV-series. Alot of their songs are very very sad/ :(

[albums]
Heaven's Song
Forbidden Love
Terra Firma

Nobuo Uematsu : Game music composer, famous for he's Final Fantasy soundtracks. If anynone knows how to write a melody, this is the guy!
NEARLY ALL FINAL FANTASY SOUNDTRACKS!

Contempoary Japanese music is amazing - I highly recommended everyone to @ least give it a try.
Ahhh, its one of the many reasons why I want to live in Japan one day!

:D

Here are some of my favorites, and then some... if you want Dance in all forms, you cant go wrong with artists from Avex...

AVEX RECORDINGS
Ayumi Hamasaki - but get her original songs...

E.L.T - best way i can describe their style, is tech-rock... sounds like late 80s style in America...

Globe (or Tetsuya Komuro) - all styles of electronica, from ambient, to trance, to trip-hop, to DnB...

T.R.F - dance/techno, mid 90s style...

Namie Amuro - her older stuff is more euro-beat and ballads... then went to an alternative feel... now more hiphop

MAX - true J-Pop

Hitomi Shimatani - she's got some nice RnB style... and she's hellllllla fine...

OTHER ARTISTS
Hikaru Utada - RnB and sometimes the J-Pop sound...

Chemistry - the Craig Davids of Japan... some house, some RnB, some 2-step, some ballads...

Morning Musume - ok, they have that J-Pop sound too... but the problem with them is, most of their music is just Euro-dance songs translated into Japanese...

Speed - 4 gurls, J-Pop sound...

Kyu Sakamoto - the song called "Ue ni muite aruko" is the original to 4PM's (For Positive Music) "Sukiyaki"

The Southern All-Stars - the Beach Boys of Japan... been around for a long time too, and still going strong...

S.M.A.P., Kinki Kids, Tokio - they come from the Japanese music phenomena called a "Johnie's group"... can have the J-Pop sound... can have a rock sound... RnB... and they dance

Seiko Matsuda - the Madonna of Japan, same age too... she's also in the movie "Armageddon"...

Hibari Misora - the most reknown singer of all time... died at an early age... her music was most influential in reshaping Japan after the war... sung Jazz, Enka (real traditional Japanese music), ballads, etc...

Ken'nichi Mikawa - how do i explain him... he's like Liberacci (sp?)... or Boy George... except, he's not gay, he just dresses feminine (have to understand Japanese culture for this one)... and he sings traditional Japanese music... VERY popular...

Sachiko Kobayashi - sings traditional... sings contemporary...

another thing you should checkout, is the "Kouhaku Uta Gassen" (roughly "The Red & White Song Battle")... this is the biggest music event that happens on New Years Eve... all the best singers (if invited) perform on this night on this show... its basically a fun battle between the red and white groups (Men vs Women)... along with the younger singers and groups, traditional singers will sing too... the last two singers i mentioned, are always the most anticipated... Kobayashi always wears a crazy looking dress that usually costs a million or so to make... to best describe, its almost like something you would see from performers in Vegas...

Utada Hikaru aka Hikki is the best. She's so talented and smart, cute also may I add :tongue2. She speaks fluent Jap and English cuz her parents flew back and forth between American and Japan when she was young. She used to attend Columbia Universit but took a break to pursue her singing career which is doing amazingly well. She's comin out with an American album sometime next year I believe, I can't wait :tongue2.
