You can now talk
Tiesto-Magik are you still friends with tiesto and ferry corsten
Armin Van Buuren yeah yeah! i saw ferry before his performance in he heinekin music hall, the day before i went to his house and gave him some records. i dont see tiesto that often, but we do text sms each other! we're still friends.
Solar Do you think the trance being produced out of the UK at the moment the best its ever been?
Armin Van Buuren there are some really nice traks from the UK at hte moment, but i dont think it';s the best it's ever been.
HungryHippo WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE TRACK YOU HAVE PRODUCED/REMIXED - COMMUNICATION IS STILL MY FAVOURITE :)
Armin Van Buuren i think, my mix of seven cities for solarstone, and my motorcycle mix is pretty big i would say!
Tiesto-Magik do you think your going to be no.1 dj this year or what do you think you going to be ranked?
Armin Van Buuren i hope so, but i dont think so!
febz during your tours in this region, have you seen any australian or new zealand dj's which really impressed you...if so, than who?
Armin Van Buuren i didnt have a lot fo time to see any australian or NZ djs, i dont know the scene too well.
Tiesto-Magik your 76 album was great but why did you name it 76?
Armin Van Buuren when i put all the tracks together the length of the album was exactly 76 minutes, which is also my year of birth (1976).
ambertje What has been your most memorable party/event that you spun at?
Armin Van Buuren there are actually a couple, not 1 party thats been my favourite. all my tours in australia have been great, but also some in israel and the uk. ive also just done a tour in america. at this level it;s hard to have one 'good' night, they are all great. different and special in their own way.
Tiesto-Magik are you going to release a dvd?
Armin Van Buuren there are plans, but nothing concrete.
HungryHippo DO YOU SEE YOURSELF BEHIND THE DECKS WHEN YOUR 50?
Armin Van Buuren yes!
ofo_nunez I was wondering when you are not mixing and creatind worldwide hits, what are your hobbies? Do you listen to another type of music other than electronic music?
Armin Van Buuren i like to watch movies and dvds. i try to go to the gym. play video games sometimes! i definitely listen to other types of music, im a big fan of coldplay.
Solar Many DJ's are co-producing or are working much more closely these days. Are you planning to co-produce any tracks in the near future and if so, who with?
Armin Van Buuren yes definitely, but i want to focus on my own album. i have made a deal with MIKE to produce a track, and im working on my second album as we speak.
bavajee armin, i recently heard u had joined the vandit label. i was wondering what was ur reasoning behind that?
Armin Van Buuren no, i didnt join the label. last year i released a track i'd done with tiesto to the label, but im not signed to them in anyway.
SoupaFlys How much importance do DJs like yourself place on DJ polls such as DJmag Top 100 Djs?
Armin Van Buuren everybody can understand that its quite important, the fact that people chsoe me as the number 5 dj last year opened a lot of doors and im thankful for that. but im not going to change my sound or my attitude, its just great recognition - to know so many people support you in what you do.
Tiesto-Magik whats your favourite club in the world?
Armin Van Buuren no, i have several!
HungryHippo DO YOU EVER MIX WITH CD DECKS?
Armin Van Buuren yeah, i have to! there is so much stuff sent to me on cd that im obliged to mix with them. i prefer vinyl still
NismoR31 apparently you're doing a 6 hour set in melbourne. Will sydney get anything like that?
Armin Van Buuren i dont know! to be honest im not sure of the entire schedule yet. we're working on visa and that as we speak.
Solar Where is the one place on earth you haven't played but would like to?
Armin Van Buuren i would love to play more in south east asia and south america. im going to sth est asia soon, so that onnly leaves south america - i wil be there next year!
ofo_nunez How long does it take you to produce a song? I mean coming up with ideas, do you brainstorm for a long time or does it come naturally to you within your feelings? What do you do to get into that state where u are flowing with ideas?
Armin Van Buuren everywhere from 1 day up to 2 or 3 weeks!
in the spotlight - help.bot [ITM] EXCLUSIVE: ITM secured exclusive giveaway's which are up for grabs to those who log in to the chat tonight! (scroll the window down for more details)
Deschanel So what's your view of progressive house?
Armin Van Buuren i love it! i always say 'dont be a prisoner of your own style', so i often play those records.
aquinas From which country do you get the best crowd reception, when DJing?
Armin Van Buuren it feels like trance is some sort of a global feeling, so it doesnt matter if i play in holland or LA or NY or sydney or tokyo or tel aviv, its like a global feeling. that's why the internet is so great, it conects so many people.
Zerotonin Did you find remixing "Motorcycle - As the rush comes" difficult after the "Sweeping strings" remix was so succussful ?
Armin Van Buuren thats an interesting question! i didnt want to make a 'better' mix as its a dance music classic. i just wanted to make a more 'armin-ish' mix, and i think i did a good job!
lilpumpkin do you prefer producing or dj-ing
Armin Van Buuren i cant choose, theyre so different from each other! producing is something you do in privacy and you can experiment. djing is great ot play for a lot of people.
Astrofox any up and comers we should keep our eye on?
Armin Van Buuren i think harry lemon is doing really well at the moment, the signum guys, and i heard remy play the other day too - great!
Zerotonin Will "Blue fear 2003" get its own vinyl release ?
Armin Van Buuren yes!
Armin Van Buuren says there are some big names working on remixes for it!
SoupaFlys What is your personal favourite track on 76
Armin Van Buuren again, i have to say i can't chose a favourite! every track for me has a different story behind it. there are some i particularly like, burnt with desire - it was the first time i'd written vocals myself. blue fear - has done a lot for my career.
Solar How do you find the travel?
Armin Van Buuren im not a big fan of planes. i dont mind being away from home, i get to see so many new places and people. but im just not a big fan of airplanes!!
in the spotlight - help.bot ITM Feature Article: "Armin van Buuren is a Dutchman flying high" by djwa - scroll down for more!
HungryHippo WHAT IS THE WEIRDEST THING AN ARMIN-CRAZED FAN HAS DONE DURING ONE OF YOUR SETS
Armin Van Buuren not during my set, but there are weird things that have happened. i had a TA meeting, i was ill and in atlanta 2 weeks ago. i went to the meeting and told the fans 'dont stand too close you might get ill', and this girl got up and said 'we would be happy to catch a cold from armin van buuren'!
djdrey says FROM THE MODERATOR: I have LOTS of questions in the queue everyone. You're welcome to post more, but we may not get though them all. Hope you're enjoying IN THE SPOTLIGHT with ARMIN VAN BUUREN!
ambertje Does it ever surprise you to what extent some fans go for you and can you understand why?
Armin Van Buuren its a big honour, and i have a big passion for music and some people find that passion in my music - that's even more valuable than any money or dj chart, its about making people happy with what you do.
Solar Where would you like to see yourself and your music in 5 years time?
Armin Van Buuren i would be really happy if i could stay at this level. still doing my radoi show, still producing, still travelling the world.
Tiesto-Magik do you think you will be making some techno tracks like tiesto?
Armin Van Buuren i dont know, wherever the music takes me! but its not likely.
Insomniac what is your honest evaluation of ferry's 'rock your body rock'? there's been a mixed response at least amongst the people i've spoken to
Armin Van Buuren i quite like it. i dont know if its something for my set, but i think ferry is trying to create a new sound for himself. personally i like his new sound.
tracid Do you prefer playing the big parties or the more intamite clubs?
Armin Van Buuren both, as long as there is enough variation between the two!
Astrofox when did you realise you wanted to be a dj?
Armin Van Buuren i dont know, i think ive always wanted to play music for people - and i guess that makes you a dj?! for as long as i can remember ive been playing music for people.
tracid In the UK it seems that Armin VS Ferry is becoming a frequent occurance - do you think this will grow and will we ever see something like this in Oz?
Armin Van Buuren hopefully! theres nothing planned. we get this question a lot, but we all have a very busy diary so it can be really hard to find the right time. ferry and i are great friends, so its likely!
olju Where will you play on NEW YEAR'S EVE?
Armin Van Buuren i cannot tell yet!
Armin Van Buuren says probably closer to home than anyone might think...!!!
Insomniac do you/did you play any "musical instruments", at least, the more conventional/classical ones?
Armin Van Buuren no.
PieroCristiani What do you think of DJ's that try too hard to keep underground?
Armin Van Buuren i dont know, i think the question answers itself! i dont really know the difference between underground and commercial?
Solar Is there anything specific you look for in a track or producer before you consider signing it / them?
Armin Van Buuren it has to touch me!
stevenebsary how many people do you travel with when you are on tour?
Armin Van Buuren usually just 1 person, a lot fo times my girlfriend or one of my managers (i have 2)
b1__ How long did it take you to get your home studio to a stage where you could start making quality Trance? Did you do it before you were "big"?
Armin Van Buuren i jsut started with a sampler, and with that i made Blue Fear. you dont need a big studio! its never about the equipment in the kitchen, its about the chef.
Solar Most DJ's have favourite labels from which they like to source their music. What are yours if any?
Armin Van Buuren i have a lot of favourite labels, its really hard to ansewr this question. a lot of dutch labels. i look more at the tune.
lilpumpkin You incorporate progressive tracks during your sets, do you think you will ever move away from being a "trance dj" and move into other genres
Armin Van Buuren no!
SoupaFlys Some ppl say that the dance scene is in decline. What is your view on that?
Armin Van Buuren absolute bull! im still playing sold out venues, and even during weekdays.
HungryHippo I HEARD YOU HAVE A DEGREE IN LAW...IS THIS TRUE? AND IF SO HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO COMPLETE?
Armin Van Buuren i do have a degree in law. it took me 6 years to complete it, because of my 'other' activities!
luckyphilihn whats your view on mp3 swapping?
Armin Van Buuren its illegal! we have to face the future and find a solution fast for downloading.
in the spotlight - help.bot [ITM] EXCLUSIVE: ITM secured exclusive giveaway's which are up for grabs to those who log in to the chat tonight! (scroll the window down for more details)
lanithium any word on when the rising star remix of burned with desire will be released? cant wait to get it :)
Armin Van Buuren i just got the promo, so i expect any time now!
Astrofox do you ever get sick of doing ASOT every week (selecting tracks, doing a mix, voiceovers etc.)
Armin Van Buuren nope, i love it! and that's because of you, the listeners!
ofo_nunez How much time during the day do you spend it just to yourself, without the media, djing, airplanes, etc? A
Time you can dedicate just to you?
Armin Van Buuren during the week i normally only have meetings at the armada office, and for the rest im in the studio.
aquinas I read on your website that you have a Roland JP-8080 in your studio, and I am considering buying one; is it a valuable piece of kit, or don't you use it much?
Armin Van Buuren i would actualy not recommend buying it. all the sounds in that machine have been used over and over, if you wanted to be original i wouldnt buy it.
Astrofox do you still get nervous before a big set?
Armin Van Buuren always!
ambertje Do you ever tire of all the attention that goes along with being Armin van Buuren?
Armin Van Buuren as long as people talk about the music, then i dont mind.
Astrofox have you ever ventured into other styles like breaks of house?
Armin Van Buuren no, i will always stick to my own sound
Astrofox a debate raged in sydney after your 4 hr set. was the girl behind you your girlfriend or your manager?
Armin Van Buuren it was my girlfriend!
Dj Logik Did you ever get into the rave scene in holland when you were younger?
Armin Van Buuren yeah, i went to a lot of big parties.
Tiesto-Magik your asot radio show is getting really big what do you think about that?
Armin Van Buuren it's a big honour for me. i dont get any money for the show, a lot of people think i have a big team of engineers and stuff, but its all me!
Defect if u could choose one dj to spin back 2 back with ... who would it be??
Armin Van Buuren i dont know, its impossible!
HungryHippo HOW MANY TIMES DO YOU DJ ON AVERAGE IN A WEEK?
Armin Van Buuren 3 or 4 times, not including ASOT
aquinas What do you feel is your most successful production alias?
Armin Van Buuren armin van buuren!
Zerotonin Armin, Did you write the vocals for 76 or did the vocalists ?
Armin Van Buuren both.
in the spotlight - help.bot ITM Feature Article: "Armin van Buuren is a Dutchman flying high" by djwa - scroll down for more!
febz you'll be playing in my home country, malaysia in december....the elevation raves are one of the best outdoor raves on the highland there.....have you done any research as to the music tastes there and do u have any expectations??
Armin Van Buuren i havent done any research, i always think if people book me then they want to hear the armin van buuren sound!
SoupaFlys Is trance a culture in Holland? It seems so many big name trance DJs come from there?
Armin Van Buuren a lot of people ask this quesiton, and it is difficult to answer. in holland we grew up with 'mature' dance music, so all the djs in holland have listened to it for almost 13 years now.
zefi How success has changed your life?
Armin Van Buuren i dont get to decide whatever i want to do anymore, people sometimes have to decide for me - which can be a pain. but i cant see anymore down sides, its a big honour to be at this stage.
ofo_nunez How did you begin Djing? I mean how did you start? Who got you into electronic music?
Armin Van Buuren a couple of my friends, we exchanged mix tapes, ben lybrant has been really improtant for me.
NismoR31 does the quality of parties in australia compare to those around the world? we always see videos & photos of big parties in europe which totally blow me away!
Armin Van Buuren i think its more the excitement in australia. you have a wicked scene out there, and i cant wait to go back!!!
pinkhelmet is it hard to stay grounded with the amount of attention you receive from the girls all around the world.?:)
Armin Van Buuren hahaha! of course. |

I thought there were too many questions about his touring dates & just bull,
I would have liked more questions about his ideas on his productions & his remixes, no one ask anything about his set structuring...
was still interesting though... |

cant believe i just read through that whole thing, funny how you can read things that u want to read but when it comes to uni one page seems all that much longer.
anyways - seems like a good bloke with a good lifestyle, would still catch his set when he comes down to Oz. |

I agree with Zerotonin. I came out of there with the impression the whole thing was just a bit of marketing fluff. I was almost cringing thinking of him back in Holland spending time on these. Surely he must hate doing this stuff.
Perhaps next time something like this comes up we should all take some time to come up with some questions before hand; perhaps we could start a thread in here on the subject. |
