Final Fantasy: Spirits Within - Review

It's really funny, because most people here are in awe of FF, when, usually, they can spot crap a mile away! Every critic on earth is saying the same thing about "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within," and I agree - The visuals are mind-blowing and revolutionary, but they're just the icing on a crap-flavored cake.
The visuals are awesome, but I have two problems with them: first, they never draw me in to the movie. This may be a combination of it's bad aspects, but the visuals, though incredible, just can't make be suspend disbelief. The second problem is that since the models were made at different times (Dr. Ross's being made first, the African-American soldier's being made last), they all have different levels of quality, and it creates the first of many inconsistencies in this film.
The 2nd incon is the voice acting. Some is right on the nose, but other times the actors lack dedication. Add this to the fact that the dialogue is crap! James Woods must be embarrassed by some of the stuff he said (like that "touchy-feely things" line). A simple dialogue rewrite would have made this story so much more believable.
As for the acting (both voice and character movement), Ming-na stays in role, but looks cartoonish at times. But will she be confused when she refers to herself as Dr. Ross on ER, making the entire world hope for a George Cloony comeback? Alec Baldwin played that role fifty-thousand times. Dr. Cid was normal, along with most of the characters. The Military squad got on my nerves, but not as much as Hian, the Villain. He is the antithesis of a Square villian: dumb, idiotic, and remorseful (he attempts to kill himself in regret of his actions). But he isn't deep! He's one layer, just like George W. Bush: "I want this defense system used!" Well, who gives a crap! He does evil things, but he's not evil. He isn't cool, and I could kick his ass. If I can kick a Square villain's ass, then something is wrong! But, for the most part, the Acting is average, but at times stupid and campy.
Next, you come to the meat 'n potatoes of any Square production: the story. It seems that they can't condense 40 hours of gameplay into 90 minutes, a common Hollywood problem. Roger Ebert and I had the same problem walking out of the film: how are these people shooting ghosts with conventional weapons? This, along with many other missed facts, makes you fill in the holes yourself, but not in the fun, interpretational way that "Akira" did. And even if this were a 40 hour RPG, I don't think I would like it, since it's your regular recycled B-movie garbage. It's "Alien" meets "Poltergeist" meets your average end-of-the-world Anime.
So, before you buy the DVD, please say it to yourself: I've been deceived by eye candy. If you guys are enticed by a showy performance without substance again, I'll assume you are listening to N'Sync. And you sure don't want to be compared to N'Sync fans ... |

| i don't like this movie very much. too sci-fi and not a typical final fantasy in my opinion. good thing i didn't pay to watch this. good visuals but very average story and character development, if any. |

| ugh, critics...I hate em. N e way, I'm sure Square would have made the movie better if they had more money. For a first attempt at making a realistic looking computer generated movie I thought it was pretty good. And it was better than Tomb Raider :p |

hey we weren't dissing the graphics or anything, but the story as a whole just wasn't up to par with the actually game stories. it just didn't live up to the name final fantasy in my opinion. |

I think it was good.
8.5/10
You don't know how much work must have gone into the animation.
I'm an FF fan though. So that add's to it.
I'm sure it would be a better movie if it wasn't called Final Fantasy since ppl expect more from the FF series.
Ah well.
Overall 8.5/10 |
