Presented by dance magazine ID&T, DJ Tiesto won the inaugural Dutch DJ Award on Wednesday night during a ceremony in the Hotel Arena in Amsterdam.

About 30,000 people voted via internet for their favourite DJ and Tiesto, whose real name is Thijs Verwest, attracted 4,821 votes to claim first prize. Lady Dana finished second with 2,253 votes.

Voters praised Tiesto for his "subtle technique and great feeling for the moment". Voters also said he had a strong emotional style, an NOS news report said.

ID&AT magazine said the industry jury also judged Tiesto as the best DJ, claiming that he had placed the Netherlands on the map with his world-wide performances.

The DJ was named the best Club DJ of the World by British periodical Dance Star in 2002 and on 10 May 2003 he was the first DJ ever to perform a stadium concert. The concert was held at Gelredome in Arnhem between 11pm and 7am.

Meanwhile, the Amsterdam Dance Event started on Thursday and throughout the biggest electronic music gathering in Europe, attention will be placed on flyers, the main means of communication in the dance scene.

About 25,000 visitors are expected to attend the eighth edition of the eclectic annual dance festival and live music conference.
