How to EQ and compress 909 hi-hats?

I,m running some 909 sounds into Logic but need some guidence as to how they should be EQ'd and compressed please.
On the bass drum i've borrowed from some advice and have the compressor set to a 11ms attack, treshold -10/15db, and ratio 4 or 5:1, and no release. Its sounds pretty good, but its the 909 hihats i'm having trouble with.
Without any EQ or compression, on their own they sound very "full on", and too harsh. But listen to most records with a simple closed, open, closed, open hi hat pattern, and you can tell its 909 hi hats, but it just sounds different to what I have at the moment. The song I was listening to just a minute ago had this effect, Above and Beyond's "Sound of Goodbye" remix has the 909 hats that i'm after, but I guess nearly most tracks have it though.
So how do I go about processing the dry 909 hats at the moment? I guess its EQ but what do I cut? What should I boost? What freq etc? Any compression?
Thanks

| Try running it through a highpass filter. Adjust to your liking. |

As simple as that?
But if I wanted to use an EQ, that too would have the same effect as a high pass filter, as long as I cut out the lower frequencies? |

Sure, eq-ing helps, but that's not the main thing. I have just found this out myself. Use compression on your hihats to make them sound different.
Use low threshold values of about -25 to -30 dB and no attack, no release, a low ratio of about 1.5-2 and gain it till you like it. This will make the sounds of your hihats very different and if you layer well, you can get some interesting sounds!

It's amazing how many different perc sounds you can get with a 909 and some careful filtering. Listen to any Steve Porter track, and you can do the exact same really high percussions with a HP filter set in the 8000+ hz range.
I've never really tried compressing my hats that much, I'll give that one a shot. Another thing you can do is pitch them up/down. I find that pitching OHs down by about 2 tones and then running em through an HP filter has great results. |
