Hey dude's, when I compress stuff i just Turn up the Ratio but Ive noticed alot of people here do other stuff to the other settings, Ive looked up on what the rest of the knobs do but my ears aint hearing any difference when I try changing the settings, is there any advantage or way of explaining their probabilitys?

plus im getting a problem where the first kick (thats Ive compressed)
Is really loud way past the rest after it continues playing, I guess ive told it to compress too late? Idunno
hey cheggy
the first kick? Are you using reason by any chance? cos I noticed this with reason also.

You should probably read up on compression. There used to be really great articles at studiocovers but their site's been down for ages.

I never really understood compression untill a lot of reading amd more importantly, a lot of experimentation with a GOOD compressor. I get the fealing that the compressor in reason in quite average. (unless they have ugraded it since reason 2)

Well Im using Fruity

The Fruity Compressor is good I think. You should read up some more on compression, just search the forum, there have been a LOT of posts concerning compression techniques.

hey cheggy
Is there a "look ahead" or "read ahead" function on the compressor you are using. This might help the problem.

With fruity compressor to get a really pumping kick use these settings. Attack 70ms realese 2500ms ratio 4:1 threshold adjust toi your liking but around -20db is good.

Release 2500 ms???? Are you sure?
Looks a bit too much to me, but if you're sure I will gonna try it!

Yeah sorry i meant the threshold should be -40db.:whip:

Try what I do:

I have each perc sample (kick, clap, hat, congas, shake, etc) go to its own mixer track, where its seperately EQ'ed, reverbed, echoed, whatever... Then I route all those tracks to another track I label "Drums Master".. Then I put the fruity compressor on that track, and set it to the magic preset labeled, "Drums". Voila! Some punch! :)

Hey but yeah whoever has a better idea I wanna hear.

it has been my understanding that the attack time on the compressor effects the rate at witch it adjusts to the level changes ...so my guess and judging from experience i would have to say lower the attack time significantly ...or raise it significantly...not sure ... to counter that first hit.
