This is NOT another "are drugs good" thread

Hmm..can I just start by saying, this is a really serious issue and I don't want the thread to turn into another "I think E's fine", "you're all idiots for taking it", "I've never taken it but I can see why people do" etc..... thread.

I don't know if this story has reached shores other than the UK, but recently the newpapers over here have published a photo of a girl named Lorna Spinks, taken 10 mintues after she died. 36 hours earlier she had taken a "superstrength" ecstasy pill.

(the photo can be seen at http://itn.co.uk/news/20010509/britain/06ecstasy.shtm if you want to, but be warned it's really not nice, even worse when it takes up a whole newspaper page).

Anyway, what I wanted everybody's opinions on was the so-called "scare tactics" used by the newspapers.

As an example, yesterdays Daily Mirror had "109.4 degrees F" in large print on the front page, followed by "Super-strength ecstasy made Lorna boil to death". They go on to report that Lorna was "killed by a £6 tablet which was one and a half times the normal strength" and have quotes from paramedics on the scene: "Her eyes were wide open and her tounge sticking out. It was a look of sheer fright...", her friends "She was squirming so violently they had to strap her down. She was also foaming at the mouth".

Does this work (i.e. prevent people taking up/continuing drug use)? I've used the drug in the past and I must admit that although I don't believe for a second that 50% more MDMA is going to make much of a difference between life and death, that photo has made quite an impact on me, and if I ever take ecstasy again I'm sure that image will spring to mind.

I really don't want a debate on drugs in themselves though, or whether it was the pill itself, or dehydration or hypothermia which killed her, because it's been done numerous times before in these forums. I think we can all agree that if she hadn't taken the pill, she wouldn't have died.

So drugs issues aside, what do people think of this sort of reporting?

(apparently the full story - minus the photo - can be found at http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/shtml/NEWS/P4S6.shtml, though the link was broken when I tried).

i dont agree nor disagree w/ the what they are trying to do w/ this story.. the fact is that this happened so it is true.. and its just as horrible w/o the wording they use as it is with them trying to make it seem a 100 times worse. i will say the article had no affect what so ever on my views about e. ive already studied it enough that my views are secure. peace!! -layla

it's sad that stuff like this happens, but when i see stuff like this, i just think that the people just simply didn't know their limits and didn't know how to take care of themselves... just my opinion

I don't think the article does paint a clear picture of anything. Yes, "E" can be dangerous and even result in death. However, if u pace yourself and regulate your hydration, it can add to your good time. Though i feel for this girl, she took a huge risk consuming what i believe were two double stack euro's. Whether or not she knew this or not, I don't know. Yet, its your life and you need to take precautions in preserving it. Know what u are taking. Sites like dancesafe offer information on this subject. If anything, newspaper publications need to do more than publish a shock story to sell papers. People are going to continue to use "E" no matter what. If anything, publications need to help spread the knowledge about the dangers and precautions to take when rolling. All drugs in excess kills sooner or later. Thats not news. What we need to know is more information concerning "E" and further understanding about the long term effects this drug presents.

i do not think the scare tactics work on too many people. i know that everyone does their own research and decides on their own. if a person believes these stories then obviously they are not going to take the drug but most people just blame it on something else. i my opinion and from my research i know that it is actually impossible to overdose on pure MDMA, once your system gets saturated the rest just leaves. now this is what i believe because it comes from my proffesor of biochemistry who is like the smartest guy alive so i think that's correct. if a person has doubts then don't take the risk.

Im not at all scared to take MDMA(I havent yet but Im not scared to take it) Its all the other that MIGHT be in your pill that im scared of. I dont wanna be taking drano and like that. So im stayin clear of pills that I dont know what are in them.

I even think this could be counter-productive. By blaming the death on a "superstrength" pill, the newspaper is giving the impression that all you need to do is make sure your pill is "normal" and you'll be prefectly safe. Which as we all know is not the case.

The rest of the article was mainly comprised of "you never know what's in these things", which simply reinforces the belief that if your mates took one of the same batch there's nothing to worry about.

And if I thought the article was written with good intentions, rather than to sell newspapers with their "dead body picture", it wouldn't be so bad. It angers me that a publication with the potential to influence so many people acts in this way.

Thats really sad, what a waste of a life :(

My thoughts. Well a pill that kills like that is either not mdma or this girl is one of the rare individuals who has a deadly effect from the drug. The reason I suggest we don't have all the fact is because if this one girl died from this, why weren't there other cases of people getting at least very sick from this batch?

My guess is she is one of the unlucky ones who is sensitive to this drug and thus had this rare but deadly reaction. The other is we don't have all the facts, there may be other info 'conveniently' left out to scare E users.

This happens all the time in the US and Canada. There have been reports with headlines like "Exctacy kills teen" then later in the article you'll read a part which states that this pill was not mdma but something else entirely.

All I ever want to hear from news sources is fact, not fiction or exagerations. If this girl died from just a little more than normal does of E I want to know why? All the studies and research I've read shows that it takes quite a bit of mdma to kill someone, and most E pills, even double stacks are not even close to that amount.

I've taken pure mdma powder, and I've been told about 3-4 of those gell caps could kill. I've also been told one gel cap of pure mdma is equivalant to about 2-3 pressed pills without any other ingredients of course. Pure mdma is much safer IMO.

I don't like the scare tactics much, unless they are warented of course. But the fact remains that its only in RARE cases that people die from E. If we used the same thinking about Alcohol, each and every headline in all the worlds newspapers would show someone dying from alcohol or alcohol related deaths..

I want more research on mdma, less scare tactics and false information.

But its still very sad to see a young person lose their life over this. But I still think we haven't been given all the facts in her case.
