Thanks for that both of you, it's been most helpful. Now really I have to decide which to invest in. The mixer thing isn't a problem, been a DJ for a long time and have a Xone 464 with more channels than I can think of what to do with.
The thing that makes the Virus C more attractive is my CPU power not to mention some of the costs of the vst's. I suppose my next question would be which would be the most cost effective method of really brining my tracks to life? But then I guess that's a question of preference.

I actually have some things that I have genuinly been considering releasing as whitelabels to test the water but I feel that the FL sound alone can't meet the quality of sound on a release. Perhaps I am wrong about this but would like to know what you think.

Many thanks
Nem

You can definitely have great quality tracks using only Fruity Studio. I've been producing for some time now with the (great!) program and I have tested some of my tracks in the clubs. The quality was superb!
It's all about knowing what you are doing and using the right compressor/eqing/mastering tools whenever they are appropiate.

But if you start producing, my advice is to first start with a basic program, like Fruity Studio or Reason, just to get the hang of sound programming. When you get better and you really know for sure you want to go on with it, you can consider buying additional stuff, like hardware synths/effects or a mixer.
But don't start spending lots of money on it, only to find out that you don't know how to use all this advanced start!

that's just my humble opinion...

Thanks for that guys, you have been really helpful. :)

I think my main problem is not so much what I do with FL (and I agree it is a great tool, I use the studio version myself). I think my main issue was mastering.

Playing and making the music is easy enough (relatively speaking) but the main thing is that I find that I have trouble getting that proffessional richness that you get out of some tracks. At the moment I don't use a mastering program but will start to do so.

I think the other thing that frustrated me was pads. I like the atmosphere they give to a track and was finding the ones in FL a little plain perhaps. That could ofcourse be down to a lack of experience with the editing of sounds but on the whole I think that VSTs are the way to go for me.
I know you can do a lot with layers and various controlers on top of it, and frequently do.

I have actually been producing for some time now and find that a lot of the things that I did in the begining sound really flat. Each time I write something it teaches me something more. I have come to a point however that when I write tracks now I run out of CPU. Due to various things going on. Easy solution there though.

Will definately take some time out to learn more about sound programming too.

Many thanks guys

Ok, I guess I understood you wrong. If you have been producing for some time now and want a richer sound, you should definitely get some VST's. You can produce anything reasonable without them!

And for the richness of tracks, read some stuff about stereo imaging or where to put the different sounds. Also read some more about eq-ing and placing sounds in the whole spectrum.

I have been reading up on these things lately and I have discovered lots of things! Before that, I didn't use any eq-ing or compressing and my tracks sounded really bad. But after reading tons of articles on the subjects (you can find lots of them here on tranceaddict) my tracks have become more pro-sounding.

good luck!

Nem,

You should check out my EQ tutorial on this forum. Do a search for

You should also keep in mind that a lot of the polish you hear on "polished", or well-produced, tracks is the actual judicious choice of synths and sounds to begin with, not necessarily the application of a quality EQ or multiband compressor. That is to say, get your mix sounding right first with filters and fastidious sound selection, then concentrate on mastering. Good luck bud.

what do you mean ???? sound quality is poor ?
matty_dyson
no not really just finding it hard to make any sort of decent sound i could put into one of my tunes.
people talk about them so much on here and how good they are but ive never got the hang of them. and i know i need to use them because my music sounds flat and basic.

any help would be very helpful,

matty

the answer to that is VST's..

go to this thread

or the sticky thread at the top for some good VST's

also check out www.kvr-vst.com .. the best VST site

install/unzip the .dll files for the VST into your flstudio4/plugins/vst folder, go to add channel, more... then do a fast scan and all the red ones are the newly recently added VST's...

But I would at least try to know how to get a decent lead and pads going using the 3xosc before you try using VST's as they are usually more complex...

If you need more help on fruity or VST's, just drop me a pm on what you need help with and i'll be glad to help you
