"Imagine this: You are a DJ but you don't have any bulky gear. You don't need to drive to a gig, the subway/underground will do just fine. You don't need an assistant to carry milk crates of heavy vinyl. Everything you need is in your pockets and the size of a cigarette pack. You only have 2 iPods, but they together hold enough music to play for several months straight, 24-7, without a single repeat. You are a mp3j."

I think that it would be VERY cool if Apple were to either add features to the existing iPod model, or launch another model with DJs in mind (i.e. including a pitch slider). However, I don't think that many DJs would be terribly happy about it, what with all the time/money that goes into accumulating vinyl (or legit CDs).
One thing that would be cool though - a pair of iPodDJs and an addition to the current iTunes service to allow legitimate purchase/download of the latest "electronica" tracks (trying to cover all genres with this statement). It just wouldn't have the same feel, look and sound as vinyl though... |

Sounds like a pretty bad idea to me... First off, all they do is smack the Xfader over (no pitch control). Second, what about the quality of the sound ? Go to numerous other threads about how bad mp3s can sound on a big system. And what about people playing illegal mp3s ? The last thing we need is the RIAA out clubbing, checking people to see if they actually own the songs.
All in all, I'd just say that you could ipodDJ for fun, maybe a few minutes of entertainment, but that's about it. |

| there's actually a dj in NYC that does this, read an article on him about a month ago. he doesn't mix the tracks, just fades from one song to the next. |

I like carrying my record box. There is also something about making your way to the DJ booth with your box across a dance floor as it fills up. Something that pure CDJs or MP3Js will never feel. (Unless they have used vinyl at some point).
Watching peoples faces is cool. It's also nice to be seen and sometimes even recognised. What a buzz... so why would I want to change that?

iPods = cool for listening to the mixes that you have made at home, but not for djing live.

Yup, I'll second this one. Nice quality sound, slightly too heavy for my liking, and a bit expensive (compared to alternatives). But I'm really just nitpicking, they are sweet, sweet little units. |

| fading between a couple of iPods would take all the fun and skill out of dj'ing. it's infinitely cooler to be working the vinyls and getting everybody in the club more worked up and dancing than it is to be simply crossfading between two stupid iPods without even really having to beatmatch. sorry, but it sounds like a lame-ass idea to me. |
