First of all, it is PLATYPUS with a Y. The Platypus is a native animal of Australia.

The Platypus belongs to a rare class of mammals called Monotremes that only exists in Australia.

A monotreme is a mammal that lays eggs. I have no idea how the works, but anyway that's what it is.

The only other animal that is a monotreme is the Echidna, which is also a native animal of Australia. An Echidna is like an ant-eater with lots of spikes (quills) all over it.
