Why don't they make another show called, "True Life: I'm an MTV Producer"
Then they can show a bunch of monkeys playing darts against each other.
That show was horrendous! I agree with everyone here that they did not truely show any clubber I've met. Pete was the only person on the show that remotely represented a clubber, and I say that with a grain of salt.
Where was the focus on the music that makes us come out? That should of been the firth thing they talked about. Then about true clubbers that DO travel the world (on their own money) to see amazing DJs.
They obviously took zero or no time doing any type of research. They either took the story from an intern and ran with something.
As for Patricia, who the clubs in St Louis?! |

This is what I wrote them:
I am definitely appalled at your portrayal of clubbing in America. The show was absolutely horrible for the following reasons:
a) What did a young dancer's pregnancy have anything to do with the club culture? Her story does not affect or represent the clubbing scene.
b) The tracklisting and musical selection for the show was practically offensive. The tracks you chose are years old and not currently favored in today's electronic world.
c) What was the point of K-Smooth's role again? He obviously wasn't a clubber: he was an aspiring bartender and womanizer who listens to hip hop - not a clubber.
d) Not many clubbers start their day at 8 in the morning right after church, stay up all night, then go to work.
e) Not many clubbers stalk dj's, abuse their pets, and constantly abuse substances - at least not the substances you have shown and to the degree that Patricia used them.
There are many other complaints I have about this show and I feel that a more accurate portrayal of the scene should be presented at another time.
Whoever researched this topic did a very sloppy, half-assed job.
There is a whole world devoted to clubs and electronic music. My advice to you is to first find someone out there - someone not unlike myself - one that is familiar with this world, and have them depict it in an appropriate manner.
There is a ridiculous amount of people in this scene that are disgusted with not only just the show, but with MTV altogether because of it.
I'm representing these people because we are sick and tired of watching our entire culture constantly being inappropriately represented.
I would really appreciate it if you could respond to this email with more information of the reasons for depicting the culture in this light. I'm just very interested in knowing why and how much actual time and effort was put into the show.
Please view this email as merely a bit of constructive criticism. I enjoy MTV, but shows labeled "True Life" that aren't what the title indicates very much offend me.

I have. Club Velvet is a pretty descent club covering a pretty sizeable amount of space with some very nice setups on lights/lasers/etc. Unfortunately, they have been feeling a little bit of the downturn of the scene, and consequently have given into bringing the typical Moonshine DJs ad nauseum more than bringing in fresh new faces that are on the verge of breaking into the scene big. They also typically have a difficult time bringing in big name DJs who cost a pretty penny. However, they still bring in some descent sound. Take a look if ya want:

I meant no harm, just a funny remark. Since it's hard to say that your hitting a club in St Louis and keep a straight face. You know that everyone in the NE believes that NYC is the center of the EDM world.
I know now that the East Coast is the place to be for music now. From DC with Glow to Philly with Fluid to NYC with Arc to Boston with Avalon. There's always talent coming to the East Coast. |

No harm whatsoever. Besides, I agree with you fully. It's sad, though. Outside of Chicago, it's really the only thing we've got here in the Midwest, although KC has had some good stuff come through lately.
Anyways, I posted this editorial of mine on another forum, so I'll just copy and paste it here. For the most part, I agree fully with the previous criticisms:
I'm honestly surprised I'm the first to respond to MTV's "True Life" episode. I won't have too much time to respond, so this will be a quick review.
Let me say first off that MTV's depiction of club life was an absolute joke. Part of me wanted to laugh my ass off, part of me wanted to ask the producers what the they were smoking when they came up with this depiction of club life. I'm not really all that surprised really, given that we're talking about MTV. But in truth, I'm confused as hell with some of their depictions of what club life is all about, based on these 4 individuals. For the sake of brevity, I'll sum up as quickly as I can.
1. Patricia - honestly, you seem to be the most honest person of the bunch here. I felt sorry for you when your boyfriend cheated on you, and your retaliation is understandable. I would also applaud you on your decision to keep the baby, because ultimately you seemed to realize that it's not the baby's fault for the actions of your boyfriend. I'm not even a pro-life advocate or anything, but it seems that ultimately you made the right decision. I hope you continue making these right decisions for the sake of your baby.
But.....
What the hell does this have to do with club life? What is MTV attempting to portray here? That club life with ineviteably lead to cheating significant others and an irresistable pull to the dancefloor, despite whether or not you're pregnant and may cause harm to your unborn kid? Does that make any sense whatsoever? How the could I possibly relate to that? I mean absolutely no offense to you, Patricia, with this little diatribe, and I sincerely feel somewhat sorry for MTV's outlandish attempt to portray a person's club life here. It was just a terrible means of production on their part.
2. K-Smooth....
BUUUWAAAHAAHAAAHAAHAAAHAAAHAA!!!!!!!
This was probably the funniest part of the whole flick. A "mini-me" gino who, thank goodness, loves himself quite a bit, because everyone else considers him a complete nutsack. It's gino drama bags like you and your testosterone posse who wear shirts to cut off the circulation in their brains that I absolutely can't STAND at clubs. You are the f$cking dweebs that everyone laughs at. And speaking of clubs, what the was the daytime beach party thing all about? That wasn't a ing club, and again, I fail to see what that had anything to do with club life.
Oh, and the drama you refer to - get a ing life. You created the drama mini-me! And to make matters worse, you had to get your 'roids buddies to bail you out. You're like the kid stoolie sitting on a fence instigating the fights in the schoolyard. You're a little turd, plain in simple. No, wait, "I have peanuts in my CRRRAP bigger than yeou!"
Enough said.
3. Meth whore from Poland. This one I honestly was confused most of all. Was MTV attempting to say that meth is the club drug of choice now? Admittedly, I haven't been in "the scene" (I still hate saying that stupid ing word) for some time now, but have I missed out that much to see this White Trasher drug rise to the top of popularity in clubs? I'd feel sorry for this loser of a woman who obviously has her brains leaking down towards her lips and if I didn't think she wasn't such an ignorant idiot who ultimately gets EXACTLY what she deserves.
And stalking down the DJ didn't give her much credit either. Jesus, I'd state that she's insane if it wasn't so ing obvious. Look, crack whore, do us all a favor and take the first ship back to Poland and make a meager attempt to have a life.
4. Peter - the aspiring dj/producer.
Quick word of advice: don't lose your day job.
Well, actually, you first need to get a job that actually brings income, then don't lose it. The market is too saturated with bedroom dweebs producing the same over and over and over and over and over......
To me, it's part of the stagnancy of the scene as a whole - it's the same sound with few changes. Unless you bring something unique to your sound, don't bring it at all. That few second clip they had of your music was all I personally needed to hear to make such an opinion. It might do you more credit to cease from taking short cuts
and do what most other DJs/producers do to get their collective feet in the door - get a gig somewhere, become a better DJ, bring something original in your production, move up the ladder like everyone else, etc. etc. Sadly, this MTV bit might actually help you make those shortcuts, but I suspect your ass won't last too long, given your propensity for partying too long and lack of work ethic.
BTW, what the were you thinking partying the night before your first day on the job? Sorry, but you get dumb mark on your forehead for that one.
Second quick word of advice, actually to your parents: kick his ass out!
Nothing like a kid squeezing his folks out of his own personal adult responsibilities, eh? Peter's a user, and he's going to continue using until he is actually given no choice but to learn to be responsible. And the only way for that to happen is for him to learn how to live on his own. So parents, quick sucking up to his and make him more responsible. Once he's out on his own and has to pay for his own , we'll see if he sleeps in on his next job's first day of work.
Other minor thougths on the show:
- I've never seen so much ing K in my life. That made me absolutely nautious seeing that.
- Who the goes clubbing Sunday at noon all the way to Monday morning at 4 AM?!? Are you out of your ing gourds? Stupid tards.
- Speaking of tards, or E-tards for that matter, anyone else notice how E was conspicously absent throughout this entire debacle? Isin't that supposed to be the club drug of choice? Not one mention. Strange.
- What else could we expect from MTV? Nice job dildos. Do us all a favor and fire your producers for these shows in the future. It's just simply too painful to watch.
Well, that's about it. Maybe I wasn't that brief after all. Sorry. |
