What's the difference? And what do you prefer?

League is better as a domestic comp, but the union world cup/international tests are far more exciting.

OK here are the differences as i see them. I don't know the rules of rugby too well but here goes:

- In Rugby League there are 13 in each team on the field (not 15/17 or whatever it is in Rugby)

- Instead of having continuous phases like in Rugby, there are six "tackles" in Rugby League. Each time a player gets the ball they run up to the defensive line, and when they are tackled and "held" for a few seconds, then the tackle is completed and they have to play the ball. To play the ball they must stand on their feet, place the ball on the ground and roll it behind them (using their foot), to another player who then picks up the ball and the game continues....

- If the ball goes out, then a scrum is formed in line with where the ball went out. The halfback basically rolls the ball straight back through his team-mate's legs and picks it up. SCRUMS IN RUGBY LEAGUE DO NOT REALLY SERVE MUCH PURPOSE - A LEFTOVER FROM RUGBY UNION I SUSPECT. Probably the only purpose of scrums, since the team that feeds the ball wins it pretty much 100% of the time, is to free up space on the field. While all the forwards are locked in the scrum, it can open up attacking oppurtunities for wingers etc.

- (Rugby League) Try = 4 points, conversion = 2 points, penalty = 2 points, field goal = 1 point

- (Rugby Union) Try = 5 points, conversion = 2 points, penalty = 3 points, field goal = 3 points

Well i can't be bothered writing the rest of the differences, but that's a start.

Personally i prefer rugby league because it has fewer penalties, more skill (IMO), more decisive running and i was brought up on it.

Go St George Dragons!!! Wooo!!!!!!!!
