| The HDZ however has allegedly softened the hard line policies because they will have to negotiate with other political parties in relation to parliament, the leader of the HDZ has even agreed to be willing to turn over those wanted by the Hague. Do you get the sense Tito that people were just tired of the policies of the Social Democrats and thus decided to vote for the HDZ or was there more to it, you might be able to elaborate more since you are in Croatia. |

Yes, it is true that HDZ has softened up its policies quite a bit, and that the most notorious clowns were thrown out of the party. However, at lower levels there still are many very corrupt people left in that party. But the Hague issue is gonna be a real problem, and here's why. HDZ has generally cooperated with the Hague tribunal in the 1990-2000 period, although not without constant complaining. But the situation is now quite different. HDZ by itself is not strong enough to form a government by itself. So it will have to join up with HSP and DC/HSLS coalition in order to have the 50%+ majority. Now the DC/HSLS is a marginal coalition led by two wackos. But HSP is a totally right wing party that exceeded all expectations in these elections. And it has clearly stated that there's no way for them to cooperate with Hague tribunal.
Now, there's a difference between Croatia and other european countries as far as social-democrat policies go. While most of europe had some serious problems regarding economic growth during social-democrat governments, croatian growth was about 5%. That's quite a nice figure when compared to 1999 growth under HDZ which was negative. Not to mention this government has built hundreds of km's of highways through the country, while HDZ's original plan was to build highways through parts of Bosnia claimed by Croatia.
I blame the really poor electorial campaign for the failure of the current government. Like, the most recent commercial was our prime minister saying something like "I like painting. I used to paint when I was young, but I don't have time for it anymore. I hope I will again have time to do it after these elections". Then they spent a huge amount of money for some lousy singers on their tours, while they totally neglected jumbo posters. So all over town are HDZ's posters, while those of the parties from the current coalition are very rare. They also wanted to get some votes from the more right-wing oriented people, so they made stupid deals with the church, like having christian education class in public schools, or enforcing special licences for work on sunday. Anyway, it really didn't work, the only thing they did was to cause more left-wing voters not to vote. The constituency list leaders were also poorly chosen, as they were often generally unliked government officials. And finally, HDZ has told a large number of lies in it's campaign, and the current coallition didn't really bother much to deny them. Personally, I'm surprised at how much votes they got, considering how lousy their campaign was. |

Lol it sounds like you're talking about my country. :) There are those in the Republican party whom I respect though like John McCain. Damn how I wish he were president instead of Bush.
