Speakers/soundcard

I'm thinking of getting into production, so I was wondering, what's the minimum requirement, in terms of sound, for producing? The computer I've got has quite a crap souncard (I think, its the one that came with it anyway) and the speaker... well put it this way, there's no way I'd want to use that thing if I was producing my own tracks.
So what would I need? There's no way I'll be able to afford a really good soundcard and monitor speakers right away, I'm talking bare minimum, would standard computer speakers out a shop be good enough for a broke beginner?

as long as they are not "multimedia" speakers, you should be i guess all right... Multimedia speakers I find are absolutely horrible as they boost frequencies by a lot and cut out a lot of the bass

But I would invest in 100$ speakers if i were you or get some cheap 300$ studio monitors if i were you. I know it sounds like a lot, but you will always get ty sounds if you produce from ty speakers.

But then again, if you are just starting out, those things shouldn't matter TOO much

btw, do a search, you will find a lot

Dosed, I'm about to sell my Audiophile 24/96 soundcard on Ebay, let me know if you're interested.

It's in mint shape. Will probably sell for around one-hundred. I highly recommend it. I don't need anymore with my MOTU 828 mkII.
hey cheggy
Can I suggest a good sound card before good speakers. If you don't have an amp, you will need active speakers and these get plugged into either your mixer or your sound card. As you have no mixer, they will have to go into your soundcard and you don't want to run monitors out of a 1/8". So get the sound card first (it will give you other benfits like decreased latency).

The audiophile is a good choice for someone starting out.

Why don't you just use you stereo? I'm using mine also, and the quality is rather good. It saves a lot of money, which you can use in getting a good sound card, which is much more important IMO. Plus, if you have got a bit more expensive stereo, the speakers are sometimes quite good.

Stereo would be a good idea, but the computer's not in my bedroom... there's a stereo in this room, but I can never find a long enough connecting cable between the computer and the back of it.

Thanks for the ideas anyway, I'm probably only gonna spend decent amounts of money once I'm more into it... keep the suggestions coming tho by all means :)
