Basically, the influenza virus mutates so much that the vaccine that is created from the most common or threatening strain of the virus could not be the same virus (or bacterial) infection that you get...hence still getting sick. |

I am thinking about getting it. The things holding me back:
- I rarely get the flu. Maybe at most once a year.
- I heard there is a possibility of some nasty side effects in some people.

I am basically against the flu shot... for the very old, or in special cases, the very young, it may not be a bad idea. It is true that you can sometimes boost the immune system's chances of fighting of a virus by introducing small amounts of it, this imprints a genetic "code" into your antibodies that "remember" the virus and how to fight it off quickly. That being said, it is difficult to know WHICH viruses people will come into contact with, so a flu shot would be worthless in that case. Also, a high percentage of people who receive the flu shot, actually catch the flu from it! I think that if you are a healthy person, the flu shot is unnecessary. Sooner or later everyone gets the flu. That's just the way it is.
Another huge problem is that people have a tendency to overuse the name "flu"... there is NO SUCH THING as a 24-hour flu. If you are sick, ie: throwing up etc... for only 24 hours, you have FOOD POISONING. [Or you are hungover:)] It's a lot more common than people think.
I am interested to hear what other people think of this. Good topic!

I have to disagree with you on this one (based on my experience). Having a weak immune system and getting lung and sinus infections all the time, this shot that I have been taking for at least 3 years have helped me a lot (especially being breathing the same air than the other 350 people in the plane when I used to work for the airlines). Of course I got a little cold maybe once a year instead of 5 or 6 times, and it never got as bad as it used to! I agree that it is a personal thing...some people have bad side effects following the shot (like my mother who won't take it anymore)...some others don't...The only thing common to everybody who takes it is a soreness in the arm where you got injected for a day or too....How bad can that be !!? We've all had worse.
For people who caught a cold following the injection, I believe there is absolutely no connection...The virus (Influenza which is a really bad flu that can lead to hospitalization)that they inject you is dead, therefore cannot cause any infection but just build up your immune system in case it encounters this virus again. This is my understanding of the whole issue, but correct me if I am wrong.
Make sure not to not mix up the terms FLU and COLD.....they are completely different... |

Hmmmm.... that's what I'm trying to say! People rush out to get a flu shot, but if you really think about it, how many times can people truly claim to have had the flu? My point is that quite often colds and food poisoning get lumped in with the word "flu". People THINK they have the flu, when they actually don't. So when they get sick after getting the shot, they wonder why. Influenza is a fairly serious infection.
I actually didn't know that they inject dead virus cells... interesting, but for most people I still think it's unnecessary. Another drawback to all this is that they have to change the shot every year because the virus mutates very quickly. You have to ask yourself, are we creating a super-bug? If we use all our resources to fight this when it's basically unnecessary, what happens when we can't make a vaccine anymore? If you have a weak immune system, then it's probably a good idea! Keep in mind that there is a big difference between a cold and the flu. There's NOTHING you can do to prevent getting a cold. [apart from avoiding ALL human contact, which is no fun!;)] |

I don't get it. I believe that you body can become immune to such things and you shouldn't be injecting yourself with the virus to defend against it. If I happen to get sick I deal with it then. I think it is all a lot of propaganda that the Government and doctors create. That's just my opinion on it. |
Ditto this...
Your body will learn to defend itself better by dealing with infection itself.
A dependancy like a Flu shot is just that...a dependancy your body will require because over time will not know how to deal without it when the time comes...
My 2¢... |

This article will give you an idea of what scares the crap out of me!
Scary SuperBug Article...
Yikes! Do we "Over-Medicate" ourselves? (Except on weekends! :)) |

Why would you get a shot for something that your body is prepared and willing to fight?
I'll agree that the young and old and those with a bad immune system should consider this, but for all those roboust men and women, why take it?
here the thought running through my head
"sure, this way I won't get sick, and my immune system will never learn anything"
I just got through a wierd book on a deseases, and from common sense, if my body can fight it, let it! |

I never get sick. I've never gotten the flu shot before.
This year, just to shut my parents up, I went and got it, because: a) it's free b) I don't mind needles c) it'll shut my parents up.
I regret it. I have felt crappy (mild flu-like symptoms) since I got it (1 week). Others have had worse reactions.
My take on it is this: If you are healthy and strong, don't bother. If you are female, and hot, I'll be happy to nurse you back to health, K? |

I've thought about getting it every single year since i've found out about it but never have yet.
Mainly because i don't have the time to go see my GP for that.
I wouldn't mind getting it done though since every year i seem to catch one or 2 good flus
(when i left Canada last time i got the worst flu the day before i left!!).
Either ways, sometimes a good old cold can seem like a flu so you're really not escaping
much by getting it. So long as it doesn't happen during exam time, i'm happy!
That being said, i hope i've now jinxed any chance of getting the flu over exams! :nervous: :nervous: :nervous: |
