I'm new to this forum, and i need some help to decide whether I a midi controller is a good way to spend my money.
I just got Reason, and I'm not sure what or how the midi controller is going to work with it. I was planning on a EVOLUTION MK361 C-16. I plan to make some good trance music obviously :P. Please help me out.
Thanks in advance. |

Well first of all, the keys will make it easier for you to play notes, rather than entering them in with the pencil tool, so coming up with melodies might be a bit easier.
Secondly, the dials on the midi controller are assignable to functions in reason, so if you want to controller the cutoff, then you assign one of the dials to the cutoff. When automating things, it is a lot easier to automate with a hardware dial than with a mouse.
Yes, get a midi controller if you can afford one. I run the MK-249C and it is fine. If you want the 361, that's also a decent controller. |

Hehe, yeah, once you own the keyboard labels will start beating down your door.
No, but seriously, having a keyboard allows you to come up with melodies a little more easily. Plus, you can also come up with chords for pads. It's worth it to get one.
Good luck. |

That is entirely up to you. A keyboard or a piece of software isn't going to make tracks for you - it is YOU who must do the tune. |

Its a keyboard. It has keys. I might have some dials and sliders. It sends midi data. This midi data is recieved by hardware and/or software. The midi data is the notes played, how hard they are played, what dials are turned, how much they are turned, etc. Your soft/hard synth then turns this into a sound. Or the dials can be assigned to turn dials in software programs or other hardware instruments if they accept midi data. |

Sorry mate, but I refuse to believe that you do not know what a keyboard is and what you use it for. Have you never seen a piano?
A midi controller is a keyboard that doesn't make any sounds. You plug it into something that makes sounds (like a synthesizer) to play sounds out of it. Obviously, computer software does not have a keyboard, so you plug in a midi controller to the computer and play the software synths with it. |
