Atmosphere Automation
View this Thread in Original format
hey cheggy
trying to automate Atmosphere in Cubase SX. It says that it won't automate from internal messages and that you have to use an external controller. That bit is fine, but after I create a midi automation channel in Cubase, how do I then assign that automation to a specific function in Atmosphere.

So that's why it wasn't working, hehe. I didn't know about this. I will look into it seeing as I need to automate some parameters myself.

If you where using logic I could Explain or maybe Cubase SX2

Whenever I do this kind of thing I just hit play, hit the Write button on the Atmosphere VSTi window then tweak the parameter I want. SX automatically creates the relevant automation track which you can then tweak to make it how you want. If you don't see the track, try right-clicking in the track inspector and select "Show all used automation".

if I'm not totally wrong atmosphere doesn't support the regular cubase SX automation :/
hey cheggy
This is a bit silly. You'd think if you pay this much for a a piece of software, it would support automation. It also says that it runs as a stand'a'lone program but it clearly doesn't. A bit of false advertising if you ask me.

Atmosphere, like a number of other VSTi, does support automation - but only using MIDI CCs.

Here's a quote from the manual:
quote:

SLIDER/KNOB AUTOMATION
All Knobs and Sliders on Atmosphere can be automated using external MIDI
controllers and control change messages (see MIDI Control Change chart).
This transforms Atmosphere to another level of sound design and interaction.
We highly recommend that you experiment with MIDI controllers to experience
what they can achieve musically.
However, the knob/slider information is not sent from the Atmosphere plug-in
interface to the host application via mouse movements, so you must use external
MIDI control change messages for automation. The MIDI controller operates like
a "remote control" of the knob or slider, so it’s the same result as changing
parameters with a mouse. (Pay close attention to the selected Layer and Link
mode)
Due to current technical limitations, standard automation in hosts like Pro Tools
or Logic Audio 5 is ignored. Logic 5 users must enable Logic to respond to "any
MIDI controller" in the Song Settings preferences. You can use Hyper-draw in
Logic to set-up MIDI faders to automate the Atmosphere faders, which works
very similar to the Logic 5 automation system.

Yeah, I know that. This is my problem though. I don't know how to send a signal on that specific channel. For example, filter decay recieves on CC 98. How do I send a message on channel 98.

Edit a part that is outputting to the VSTi on the right channel, select the MIDI CC you want from the drop-down just under the keyboard on the left in the piano roll editor, select the Draw function and draw away. CCs like 98 aren't in the default drop-down list, so you'll probably have to add the ones you want to the list.
