I have two questions.

My first question is how old were you when you got your first turn table? and my second question is what is all the equipment that you need when you are a dj? I know that you obviously need turntables, a mixer and headphones, but do you need anything like equalizers or amplifiers? Thanx.

and i have also decided what turntable i am buying. I am going to try and get the Numark TTX Direct Drive Turntable once i have enough money;). Has anyone ever tried this turntable before, and if you have, what's it like? Thanx.

I was 19 when I got my turntables and mixer. I'm 20 now, and it was around this time last year that I got my first TT.

As far as other equipment, that depends on what you already have. I just plug my mixer's master out to my stereo...but my stereo is an old piece of junk that is probably going to croak soon. ;) I'm thinking of ditching the stereo, getting an amp and equalizer, and maybe a new pair of speakers. The 80watt speakers that I have now are pretty good, but its just the stereo that's got to go.

I was about 12 (21 now), and had crappy Soundlab belt drives and a Kam mixer with just faders and phono/line switch, oh and headphone volume, well I haven't tried the TTXs, but I've heard ALOT of good things, I think your very safe to go with them.

i was and still am 25 when i got my technics mk2. i learned on cd players and got bitten by the vinyl bug. i still dont have a proper amp, i use a desktop stereo with a set of 8in Yamaha speakers for monitors. it does the trick. everytime i think about saving money to buy some active monitors or an amp and speaker set i just go shopping for records and spend more money than i have.

I was 14 when I got my stuff, I'm 16 now.

Hi Biz,

I was 14 when I got my first urge to DJ. Got myself two belt drive TTs. Not sure what make. I'm 32 now so as you can see I have been spinning for s long time.

Appart from the decks, mixer and phones etc. you will need a way of hearing the sound. If you have a stereo with an AUX input at the back you should be ok. If you haven't then you may well need an amp and some speakers.

With regards to Numarks. They have definately improved since they first came out. I have used various different Numarks but must confess that they have very often failed to impress. I think if you have used Technics Mk 2s for 15 years you will see things very onesided, just as I do. I would however urge you to go straight for the Technics as they are the industry standard not to mention a fantastic deck.
Also if you decided that DJing was not for you then the re-sale value of the Technics is probably the best.

Mixers:
If you are thinking of trance mixing I would recomend that you shop around and see what you can find that you like. But make sure that you have 3 band EQs on each channel as you will eventually need this to do good transitions. Don't worry too much about cross fader as you don't really need one (although most mixers have one these days).

Be warned:
You may find that DJing can get very expensive very quickly. On the one hand, if you get a cheap begginers set up you will save money but because of the nature of a lot of these decks such as beltdrive etc. it may hold your development back. In the DJ bizz you really do get what you pay for. It is worth shopping around though as you can often get some very good deals.

Best of luck anyways.

i'm 20 and just got my first setup back in June, I ended up with:

2x 1200M3Ds
Stanton 505s Carts
Stanton RM-3s 3ch. mixer
1x Sony MDR-V700 Headphones.

I allready had a pretty hardcore sound system at my house, so i havent really needed to invest in aps or speakers yet.
Getting myself a pioneer mixer for X-mas:happy2:

I'm 24, just got my stuff two months ago. I started late :(

You also need speakers unless you want to mix in your headphones
