the dress policy at avalon is casual. people wear sneakers, jeans, etc, and don't have a problem getting in at all. as far as the not letting guys in unless they are with a girl. it is true that girls get in a lot easier and a group of single girls is let in before a group of single guys. however, every night at avalon there is an even girl to guy ratio rather than the party being a sausage fest. next time you go alone or with a couple guys, just ask some girls that are on line if you can walk in together with them and you won't have a problem. i also would like to add that twilo, a club that i personally went to at least twice a month had the same exact door policy, as did / does a lot of other clubs in nyc.

it's probably best to call avalon to make sure about their dress code. better u hear it from them than from people who've gone to avalon and have been less than impressed (myself included). good sound, nice lights, cramped space, crowd-vibe a little less than what i'm used to at roxy and arc. two fights in three hours! that's a bit too much for me. |

Avalon is awesome. It doesnt take much to dress a little nicer for going out .... it's not a rave joint! And Im a guy and I dress well and have walked in with a group of other guys almost every time...in fact, for Nick Warren the staff at avalon came to us in the back of the line and brought us in----so you dont have to be with a girl to get in. rubbish! :)
the crowd is OK...not amazing but who cares! If it truly is "all about the music" for you than go with your friends, find your spot, and enjoy yourself in one of the most state of the art clubs to have opened in the city in awhile.
You can wear sneakers, just not ty ones! Have some respect for yourself---it's not a matter of pretension but self respect and how you look reflects on their establishment and they want to keep a semi-illustrious look....considering they put millions of dollars into the place for us to enjoy, we can spend a few bucks to look presentable---
the staff there is the kindest staff in the city, IMHO. I reviewed Ferry's event at avalon---ytou can check it out at
http://www.cooljunkieny.com/clubs/a...ten_review.html
I touched upon some of these issues in it---- |

Yeah, I'd prolly check Lawler out at Virgin if he spins, but I'm with Game + Watch on this one - heard alot bad stuff about Avalon. Plus, any place that even gives a about the way you dress, is bound to be full of pretentious s who've never even heard of the aforementioned DJs. |
I don’t know if any of you read my post on the Oakie thread. I have been to Avalon 3 times already over the past couple of weeks, and the only issue I have had is that the sets have been unusually short. I am really not used to it. If Steve Lawler plays longer than 2 hours tomorrow night, I will stop bitching. Other than that, I appreciate the fact that I have been able to see all these talented DJ’s recently without having to travel too far.
Actually, I did not have any trouble getting in, even when I was once all by myself. I also thought the crowd was unusually nice. Frankly, I was expecting a lot of attitude. The crowd is more of a mix, and a larger portion of people may not be as obsessed as I am about electronica, but at least the ones I met were friendly and open-minded. There are naturally tons of hardcore fans as well. Who do you think those immaculate tracklists have been created by?!
I would try not to focus on the venue, but on the music. Let me tell you this if you have trouble making up your mind: if you are even remotely interested in house music, Steve Lawler is the man! I am really more of a trancer myself, but I was so impressed when I saw him back in May. Has anyone here seen him live? If yes, please stand up! I dare you to say that you were disappointed! The tribal stuff he plays is fantastic! He won’t let you stand still! So unless you can you can think of a better place to be tomorrow night, you should really check him out. |

Tristan, I havent concurred with a post this much in a long time! Excellent---you dished out the bottom line----
I too saw Lawler perform with Dave Seaman a couple years ago at billboard in Miami during the wmc....he is excellent---and i loved it! good to expand the horizons sometimes
(but I must admit that seeing Tiesto spin with BT and Way Out West at Club Spin in WMC 2001 was prob the best ever! Imagine such an amazing group in one nite!) |

| Yeah, I saw Steve Lawler and Armin Van Buuren spin at the Guvernment in Toronto back in April... I got the tickets because I wanted to see Armin, I've listened to a few tracks off Lawler's CD and wasn't impressed, the stuff he played was very boring and slow paced tribal. I was expecting to go to the Guv, sleep for a few hours while Lawler played, then go crazy at 4 when Armin was on... but I couldn't stop dancing - Lawler is a lot more fun live - it's still tribal but it's a lot more uptempo, funky, chunky basslines... I wanted to save my energy to dance to Armin but I couldn't... the groove Lawler created was just so irresistable. I downloaded all his Essential Mixes after that and I was hooked! |

after seeing lawler & seaman concluded
that i would rather go to a launge and
have a fruitful conversation with someone
than exposed to what it seemed disparate
arrays of non-sense…
my only suggestion to former limelight
is to adjust their awkward sound system
whose bass is to high and uncomfortable
to the ears regartless of the genre played |

| Lawler annihilated the Guvernment here in Toronto last Saturday... You're in for a treat! :D:D:D |

| So it seems to me that Lawler spins a music genre that differs from Trance, however the elements he spins are likeable to trance fans? can someone explain if this is true, and if so, how it is true? |

good funky house? that's my kinda style! along with some trance of course :p |

| If you're going to see Lawler expecting Trance, you're going to be sorely disappointed... Lawler's sets concentrate on percussion, plain and simple. Some of the stuff he plays may be considered "dry", as it's usually not very melodic like Trance. It's just dirty, bass-heavy, percussive progressive house. If you're a big trance fan, it's kind of hard to listen to Lawler's stuff when you're just relaxing at your computer listening through your headphones, but the raw energy of it takes on a whole different life on the dance floor. Download his latest Essential Mix (10-05-03) if you want a good example of what Lawler plays. |

OK guys and gals,
What's up? Did the party get canceled? If not, will somebody who did make it tell us how it was? |

Nope, it happened. The weather seemed to have kept the B&T people away though.
Lawler was great, spinning for a little over 3.5 hours. After that, Jollins closed it out properly. |
