haha,

I also looked at the iPod, the only thing that I can say that is an advantage with it is it's inbuilt storage, and that's it.

Frankly i'm not interested in carrying something that's first of all so big/chunky and heavy to carry in my pocket, brings back memories of my highschool monster of a walkman. And then it has no remote, can't record audio with.

I prefer my audio from something that's actually built specifically for it. With fully featured remote, smallest and lightest music media you'll ever carry. Media is getting real cheap. And seriously, how long can u listen to something before u have to change it? So you replace it every few days just like with an iPod.

And have u realised that the iPod has a battery that lasts only 8 hours? AND it's inbuilt, which'll mean that u have to pay big $$$ to replace it.

Yea i know, some smart arse is gonna come along and say that my unit also has an inbuilt battery. BUT mine'll only cost me $60 to replace in three years as this price has been set by Sony.

Not sure about this Zen, but i've heard that it's even bigger and heavier.

Anyway, this is not about me or my choice. I'm just giving u something that'll cost a heap in Aus cheaper.

Happy debating.

I shall enjoy debating.

I'll say now, as long as you're happy with what you got. Great. Go for it. I've had TWO MD's and they have both ed out on me (the lasers are getting ter since the 2nd gen), so maybe I'm biased, but I certainly don't want 2 waste more money 2 Mr Sony.

You raise a good point about battery life. It will die. You can get kits for $80 to replace it, no big deal, other then voiding your warranty. If it dies, or gets < 4 hours per charge within a year, you'll get a new iPod for free, under warranty. BOTH my MD's have had batteries die in a year, and the 2nd time I tried 2 get a new battery for free; $60 later. Who honestly sits down for 8 hours straight listening to a device before turning it off? iPod's have sleep capabilities so you won't wake up with it flat. If you're not listening to it for 8 hours straight (which the only way I can think of that is flying from here to Malaysia), battery life is fine.

In regardest to smallest and lightest media, the iPod has No media, it's all internal, 1 device and ur done, no changing discs (that a pro and a con). How many discs do you carry with you @ 1 time? How do you know when you want to listen to something older? I can't prempt my lifestyle and used 2 carry 3 md's on me @ all times, just in case. Now I've got it all @ the flick of a dial, or just using the remote.

In regards to weight my iPod is more solid then my MD, yeah the MD is smaller, but it's case is also more fragile (my 4x is my 2x was like farknig steel casing or something).

Both iPod's and Zen's have remotes. The iPod can also record, and it can also broadcast it's music.

It has no doc in/doc out features, so u can copy music whatever way you want, without having to "hack" the system.

The sound quality of an iPod and Zen both kill a MD. The ATRAC algo, is great for ears outside and stuff...plug it into a decent system @ your house; sounds crap eh? Even @ 1x it's not as good as a 320vbr alt exterme mp3 that iPod and Zen can take (zen's can take WMA also).

Bottom line for my bias; I've had 2 MD's that both crashed on me, that sound ter then an iPod, have had worse long term battery life (under a year), hold less per device, aren't a portable hdd (never know when that'll come in handy). This time around I got an iPod, and man I'm so much happier.

I'm djway and that's my story.

I was going out of my way 2 keep out of this thread with out saying how good an iPod was, as this isn't the place when someone wants to see or buy a MD.

I got baited with Zen talk, honestly I'm sorry if you really needed these sales, but at least now everyone is getting a full view of mp3/wav technology on the market.

i dont understand the problem with this? Other than i cant transfer my recorded sets via USB, i have no issues with it?????

Anyways at the end of the day people buy things for different reasons and are going to defend what they spent their money on.

I could have gone either way and i chose the MD. I had no problems with my last one.... other than getting it stolen :( so i went for another one.

Wade who's to say you iPod wont die? you havnt had it long enough to compare it to your MD players. Ive had no problems with my previous MD player in regards to Batt life, lasers etc... I carry 1 exta disc on me and thats it.

My old MD player didnt even chew up more than a quarter of the battery life for my 5 week Europe trip! Thats mega good, and it was used on every flight for long periods of time, i was amazed! Amidetly it was a duracell battery (u cant put that in an ipod :P) but i came prepared with like 5 extra batteries and didnt even use a quater!

Wow that's great battery life! They are meant 2 last 20 hours 4 internal and i think the externals were the same? Obviously not :) [or they've re-optimised their coding]

iPod if it dies in a year, replaced no issues. If it dies out of that, , i've been done over 3 times. The research I did before getting this, has said lots of people are really happy with their performance since they 1st generation (this is 3rd Gen)...

The thing has a HUGE online set of diags.

The problem with docking is that you have to 'dock something out' and in..iPod's have 1 touch sync button, get some1 else's iPod and you can copy the same file back over to it. Using Sony's app (I believe) once a file is on the MD, you can't copy it 2 another MD drive or disc (or there's a limit of 3 transfers or something)....it's just one more hassle against it.

I've had the Sony MZ-R900 since it first came it (in Asia). It's pretty solid, but still, I really like the design, capacity, functionality of the iPod. I can store a lot of livesets on it, use it as an external hdd when I go over to someones house etc. For the price, I think it trumps the MD. The main problem with MD is that you have to change discs all the time, considering I record at 2x LP I had to carry a bunch of discs whenever I say go to school, 4x LP is just terrible quality in regards to sonics.

I've seen the software Sony provides for the NetMD's and it's terrible.

For iPod
For CD Encodes
PC -> 256 AAC -> iPod -> ME :D
or for livesets
PC -> 192 MP3 -> iPod -> MD ;)

Which leaves about 20GB worth of data files.

The only gripe with the iPod is battery life, I hope Apple increases the capacity of the battery in the 4th Gen iPods.

I'm not as jaded about MiniDiscs as you Wade, I used my MD player for around 12 months before I bought the Zen and had absolutely no problems with it.

The battery life is good (buy decent brand batteries and you can get 20-30 hours plus of listening time, though much less for recording. The dock-in/dock-out feature was never an issue for me since I didn't have the PC-MD series, I had to transfer music on there at single speed, so at 2x compression it'd take 160 minutes :/

I used an optical lead for this, so no quality degradation thankfully.

My only real issue with it was that it just wasn't quite loud enough .. sitting on the train I always thought it could use a bit more volume to fully distinguish it from the background noise.

I still use it to record sets straight off the mixer, and this is where I'd still suggest people buy one. If you want to record stuff, whether it be uni lectures, your mixes, or whatever, MD will do a better job than any of the MP3 players out there.
