Rane Rotary mixer question...

I'm confused about this Rane rotary mixer everyone raves about. Does it have eqs or not? I the pictures I have seen of them in booths...they seem to be accompanied by a whole other eq mixer or something. I could be wrong, but this past Saturday I was at Avalon in NYC, and it looked like Ferry was using the Rane to mix, but he was using the DJM to control eqs....Someone please shed some light on this for me. Thanks.

yeah, that rane 2016 rotary mixer that you see everywhere doesnt have EQs by itself. the EQ section is "optional".... to the tune of about $600. i read somewhere that avalon ny had a phazon rotary mixer in there but i've never been there.....so i dont know. avalon boston has the rane mixer w/ the eq section.

Avalon NYC doesn't have a Phazon system...would they have a Phazon mixer without the system? IDk. Anyway, thanks for the info...

alright, i read something wrong in the new york forums. my bad. they were talking about the system @ arc.

most good rotary mixers dont use eqs becuase eqs arent needed. everything is done by filters.

The Rane rotary mixer, is I believe, the MP2016, and the eq add-on to it is the XP2016. I could be wrong on that though. You don't get the eq with the mixer, you have to buy it separately!

The reason they don't include the EQ's is because they want the cleanest possible signal path. An EQ is a whole bunch of extra electronics, and those will irremediably pollute your signal with extra noise or distortion. So they leave you to decide about what you want. A&H did the same thing with the Xone:V6, everything comes in option.
Of course you'll understand that's not the whole reason, part of it is monetary also. They can make an extra buck out of it.

If you look at audiophile grade equipment, they pay insane prices to NOT have any extra options :p

I know you're probably being facetious, but audiophile-grade equipment means (at least in principle) that they use better (and more expensive) parts. A dated example from my copy of Horowitz and Hill The Art of Electronics: "The LM833 is a low-noise dual op-amp intended for audio applications (a "gold-plated" op-amp for this application is the ultra-low-noise LT1028, which is 13dB quieter, and 10dB more expensive, than the 833!)." Translation: the audiophile part is ten times better, but it costs ten times more. In this example, you really do pay for what you get! :tongue3

Is it possible to use the Rane in conjunction with another mixer and use the eqs that way. Again, i could be wrong, but I'm almost positve that Ferry was using the Rane to mix, but the djm600 to control eqs...

Everything is possible with a little improvisation. The Rane doesn't feature any inserts, so to be able to have a different EQ for each channel, you'd have to work with the auxes.

But seriously that defeats the whole purpose of the Rane imo. Keep in mind that the quality of the signal, depends on the weakest link in the signal chain (between the two mixers, that would be the DJM). If it's only for the rotary knobs they have the Rane, they could have found a cheaper solution (like a DJM3000 with the rotary faders).
If it's for sound quality, they should have got the XP2016 frontend, and maybe kept the DJM apart for dj's that don't like rotaries.

Its not that rane does not include eqs, because djs dont need them. Its about keeping as high quality possible on each unit, keeping signal as clean as possible, so they have an external unit to take care of the equing.
Ive seen in many clubs locally where they stock the Rane MP2016 with the XP controller... I have also seen pics of other clubs setup that include the MP2016 as the mixer, including the XP along with the setup.
