Can i call this good news??? I've also dedicated this thread to Cyrus_King. Its not everyday my inbox gets a positive email in regards to Israel or Jews worldwide, funny thing is Cyrus and I had a few hours to discuss some issues on EMC, and i think he even surprised himself how similar his views are to mine. :-) haha, you guys probably think its a joke... pm cyrus i guess! ha! So in honour of Cyrus seeing "my light" (to some degree) - i dedicate this positive progress to him!

Greece: In response to the tens of thousands of emails sent by activists worldwide who joined the Wiesenthal Center's protest to Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis to finally take proactive measures to curb growing antisemitic hate crimes and rhetoric in Greece, some high profile measures have finally been announced by the Greek government to address the growing threat.
Just last week, in response to the Center's Travel Advisory urging extreme caution when traveling to Greece, Athens announced the introduction of a new law to crackdown on antisemitism and racism. It is expected that the proposed measure will come up for a vote in the Greek Parliament before the end of the year. Additionally, they announced they would establish a national Holocaust Remembrance Day. In a related development, Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou contacted his Israeli counterpart, Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom, to discuss ways to work together on the problem of antisemitism.

Turkey: While in Turkey to attend the funerals of those who were killed in the twin synagogue suicide bombings, Dr. Shimon Samuels, the Center's International Liaison Director (pictured right at cemetery) attended the funerals of the Jewish victims in Istanbul and expressed solidarity with the Turkish, Israeli Chief Rabbis, and with community leaders. Dr. Samuels also went to the sites of the damaged synagogues, and visited the injured in the hospital.
One week after the attacks, the terrorist group which claimed responsibility for the bombings, sent Turkish Chief Rabbi Isak Haleva a message wishing the "Dirty Jews a peaceful Shabbat." The group then blamed the Jews for destroying Islamic society saying that corruption and prostitution have poisoned Muslim culture. In a related development, the Wiesenthal Center denounced an editorial by the Editor-in-Chief of Al-Akhbar, a leading Egyptian newspaper in which Jalal Dwidar alleges that Israel's intelligence services could have been behind last week's Istanbul terrorist attacks and had a role in the 9/11 World Trade Center attack.

United Kingdom: At hearings in the British Parliament last month, the Wiesenthal Center testified on European Union funding of Palestinian terrorism. Dr. Shimon Samuels, together with Ilka Schröder, a German Member of the European Parliament, who has led a campaign for transparency in European Union funding, presented evidence of the paper trail of EU funding to the Palestinian Authority which continues to be misappropriated for incitement against Jews and to fund terrorism. Samuels and Schröder were the only two witnesses to raise the issues of antisemitism and incitement to hate perpetrated by the Palestinian Authority.

India: The Simon Wiesenthal Center opened its world renowned Holocaust exhibition The Courage to Remember - the first ever of its kind in India at the Indira Gandhi National Center For The Arts in the nation's capitol in New Delhi. The opening was attended by leading, political, academic, and religious personalities, including the Chief Justice of India's Supreme Court, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, a revered Hindu Spiritual leader, parliamentarians, a dozen Ambassadors from four continents and the Indian Media.

Finland: At the urging of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, Finnish President Tarja Halonen has agreed to appoint a commission of inquiry into the deportation from Finland to Nazi Germany during World War II of approximately 3,000 foreigners among them numerous Soviet Jewish prisoners of war and political officers of the Red Army. In a letter to Wiesenthal Center Israel director, Dr. Efraim Zuroff, President Halonen wrote, "I fully agree with you that it is always essential to disclose and acknowledge realities related to the history of each country even - and perhaps especially - when this involves painful aspects. Transparency and openness are cornerstones of a democratic society."

United States: Searching for Anne Frank: Letters from Amsterdam to Iowa a new book published in association with the Wiesenthal Center has just been released. While Anne and her sister Margot's story of hiding has become famous worldwide, their letters to American pen pals Juanita and Betty Wagner have never before been published until now. Through firsthand reports and interviews with Juanita's sister Betty Wagner, as well as never-before-published photographs, Searching for Anne Frank weaves the story of two girls - one an American Methodist and one a Dutch Jew - against the backdrop of pending World War II, its brutal reality, and its aftermath.
