need clarification in setting up hardware with computer

Alrighty.. bear with me, cause im trying to setup everything correctly, and I want to make sure Im setting things up, according to what Im using:

Ive got a midi controller (m-audio) Keyboard, has USB, but can be used as stand alone.

Motu Midi 5X5 interface (USB)

Sound Module Roland XV-5080

Sequencer is Cubase SX

Now from my understanding, Im gonna need to hook up my module from both midi in (getting the signal from my keyboard out) and midi out (going to my Motu interface Input 1).

Im confused, cause the guy at the store argued that I only need to route my keyboard midi out --> sound module midi in. Then, my sound module midi out ----> to Motu midi interface midi in ---> Motu interface to computer via USB.

He said I would not need to send sound card signal out to my sound module midi in... Ive done some searches and have found otherwise.

Based on my equipment, what is the best (or efficient) way to hook up my hardware?

Currently, I can control my module perfectly fine from my keyboard midi out going to its midi in (in other words i get sound). However, I cant seem to record anything midi on Cubase SX.

I do have coax digital cable out from the module to ma sound card and can monitor the sound fine through my computer, but my main issue is basically recording midi on my computer and working from there.

Thanks in advanced.
hey cheggy
Midi Controller midi out --> MOTU 5x5 midi in
MOTU midi out --> XV-5080 midi in

XV-5080 audio out --> Sound card audio in (via a mixer if you use one)

Cheggy.. i was beating my head with this for past two hours. It is all good now, thanks!

So Im assuming then that I wont need another cable from my sound card out to my module in... the interface handles sending the data from both the midi keyboard and the computer/sequencer... i didnt think about that.

Cheers,
Ricky
