Subject: Volunteers required for ketamine SPET study - circular
Circular email for use for recruitment of volunteers for study ref
328/02, approved by Institute of Psychiatry, Research Ethics Committee
(REC). This project contributes to the College's role in conducting
research, and teaching research methods. You are under no obligation
to reply to this email, however if you choose to, participation in
this research is voluntary and you may withdraw at anytime.
We are looking for volunteers for a SPET scanning project, "dynamic
NMDA receptor response measured in vivo by 123I CNS 1261".
Inclusion criteria are:
Males, aged 20-40, non-smokers, clear urine drug screen, right
handed only.
Exclusion criteria:
Serious medical illness, exposure to radiation (CT scan etc.) in
last year, unable to have MRI (because of pacemaker, metal plates etc.)
The study involves having two single photon emission tomography (SPET)
scans (one during an infusion of the drug ketamine) and one MRI
scan.
The SPET scans involve exposure to a small dose of radiation, similar to
other X-Ray scans, and well within national safety limits. The MRI scan
involves exposure to a strong magnetic field. For this reason, people
who have metallic implants (apart from metal fillings) will not be able
to take part.
All the scans involve lying down for up to 1 hour at a time. Most people
are able to do this with little discomfort. The infusion of ketamine
will last for 1 hour and may lead to feelings of mild intoxication and,
occasionally, odd perceptual distortions (such as hearing things louder
or quieter than they really are). These effects are short-lived and will
disappear within 15 minutes of the end of the infusion.
The next available slots will be at the beginning of October. Participants
will be reimbursed for their expenses, time and inconvenience in taking
part in this study.

heh,
i was offered 2 grand in a circular like that to have my little toe removed and sewn back on by medical undergraduates at the QMC in Nottingham. |

ha, i was tempted, but you really must see the QMC, absolute hole and i know some medics and they are all nutters :D
besides at the time, i thought it wouldn't matter if they ed it up, i mean what does your little toe do anyway? apparently quite a lot, and its hard to walk without it!
decided against it in the end,
allough 2 grand is a lot.....hmm if the email ever came my way again I would consider it, maybe |

their brains are different so its not a fair test! they wouldnt be able to compare their brains to right handers |
