Was wondering if anyone could tell me what styli are made of?

I heard that the tip of the styli is made out of diamond.. can anyone confirm this?
Freak
yes

Care to elaborate?:D

Is it coz diamonds are a good conductor of vibrations or something?

and are there any substitutes?

So when a needle wears out what is actually happening? does the diamond erode??

Cheers!

the diamond doesnt actully wear out... its a diamond, it cant. (diamonds are the hardest substance on earth)

im pretty sure that the cantileaver (sp) is the part that wears out.... when its more rigid, it picks up vibrations better...but over time, the cantileaver wears out, and the sound quality drops.

Heres some info from a Materials Engineer ;)

Diamonds are not the best conductors of vibrations as there structure is to rigid. Infact diamonds are in an unstable state and constantly degrade when not under pressure (althought this take 100's of thousans of years). The needles used on the vinyls have an industrially produced diamond (normally) that is mounted to the tip of the cantilever. The diamond is used because of wear resistance and it holds its shape very well.

The cantilever junction to the magnets in the cartridge I believe what wheres out over time. The diamond on the tip can be damaged as well from the extreme pressure it is experiencing for such a small area.

So that we do not have to go into a huge explanation check out this awesome site.

Awesome Site

Hope this helps

Hey Bryze,

That's complete rubbish and you know it! Everyone knows that needles are made from rusty carrots! ;)

Sorry 'bout that rant... actually must say, I always love to see good info like this. Nice one.
