IF YOU AREN'T NAMING BT, YOU EITHER HAVEN'T HEARD OF HIM OR YOU'RE NOT THAT KEEN ON PRODUCTION! :D

Joke. Kidding. I respect personal taste, we all have different and informed opinions. I have so many names I'm into... but here are some, if I had to name seven of my CURRENT faves and brief reasons why:

BT
who knew such a pretty boy could seriously pound out the tech-science? The man is a geek and is popular with the girls, and knows his Pro Tools too. Not the inventor of trance but a vanguard of it, and a master of the st-t-t-utter eeeeedit. And Monster soundtrack out soon... brilliant, brilliantly beautiful and subtle.

Hybrid
I value them for some of the same reasons as BT... crisp, precise... yet not overly robotic. They mix up the head and the heart in a nice blender, who can forget the wonder that is their strings-on-progbreaks masterpiece, "Finished Symphony"... prolific remixes who are second to none at what they do.

Moby
okay, IMHO he's seen better days. And he's not too technically inclined. But for putting simple, focused ideas where they count, and for his openminded attitude that broke down genre barriers, I salute him. Moby's sound generally got stranger as the years go on (who knew "Play" would be such a blockbuster?) yet sells more copies. Weird huh?

Venetian Snares
Aaron Funk has a great name for what he does... he out-Squarepushered Squarepusher, although Mr. Jenkinson is laughing back now. But still, for technical wizardry of drill-n-bass at 200+ bpm and whacky samples of everything from car horns to a certain British TV series and yet make it still sound musical (to some anyway), amazing.

Tipper
his "Surrounded" is so lush it will eat your couch and pillows alive. Moody atmospherics but moving melodies, some DSP glitchiness but not to the point that it's a stale "look! I can show off on my computer!" I haven't heard it in 5.1 but I heard it's absolutely gorgeous. Made on an iBook, I hear! That's class!

James Holden
not the most prolific dog in the pound, but like a prize fighter, every punch he lands counts for maximum impact. From the airy-fairy delightfulness of "Horizons" ("pixie trance", LOL) to the more somber and moody vocals of Nothing + whacky xylophone action, to the melodic mongrelistic achievement that is "A Break in the Clouds", this man is solid. He has big eyes but maybe it just means he's a good observer of where the future of prog lies.

John B
a sense of INCREDIBLE humor and fun that manifests itself in his music... blending the really cheeky with downright dope production that bangs hard in a D&B way... but it's not ONLY D&B... famed achievements including pioneering "trance-n-bass", and wedding other styles like Latin music and electro to D&B. Loves the 80's, I can't blame him!
