Can 1/8" minijack be balanced?

Just wondering, can 1/8" be balanced? if yes, what would be the most efficient way of converting dual balanced XLR (2 monos) to a single balanced 1/8" (stereo)?

Im guessing the only way to do it would be:

XLR -> 1/4" \
.................1/8"
XLR -> 1/4" /

the last step would be made using some sort of 1/4" to 1/8" signal combiner?
enlighten me :)

the way you balance a conncector/wire is to ground it, thereby removing noise floor and radio frequency interference, and vent static interference. You'd have to find make your own cable(s) to do this. Otherwise, I have no idea how else to balancethe 1/8". XLRs are already balanced of course, but I must wonder why you want teh 1/8" balanced anyways?!

You could do balanced mono with a single 1/8" minijack, but not stereo. You need three pins per connector for balanced, so you could in theory use two minijacks for stereo balanced, but I've only heard of it being done with XLR and 1/4" jacks, never minijacks. If you are trying to use some sort of standard equipment then you have no chance, the equipment would have to be built to support balanced minijacks and equipment like that doesn't exist.

thanks for the replies - I figured that would be the answer

the reason I was wondering is because I want to record from my mixer to my computer using the balanced XLR instead of the unbalanced RCA cause it picks up some minimal interference which I want to get rid of (its only a minutely pulsing sound and only audible during quiet parts in tracks, I still want it gone)

I have a SB Audigy 2 Soundcard, the standard one (no fancy inputs). It really has an impressive recording quality, but I guess Im gonna have to get the SB Audigy 2 Platinum Pro ZS if I want balanced recording

it has 3 1/4", 2 rca, digital (optical, coaxial), midi, firewire
its an awesome card

Why not get a real musician's card if you want balanced recording? Go buy something from Terratec or M-Audio...
