| I'm partial to van gogh...but saying one artist is better than another is like saying jungle is better than techno, etc...It's a matter of personal taste. :) |

| H.R. Giger or Rebecca Guay is my favorite, but I think Da Vinci is probably the best. I mean, the guy caused the term "Renaissance man" He could do everything, and do it well. So while he's not my favorite, it is asking for the greatest, and I think it would be him. |

| what are you talking about?? Michelangelo is Mr. Renaissance. His 'David' sculpture and the Sistine Chapel not to mention the St. Peter Basilica are truely mindblowing.. |

I didn't mean for my prompt to be so pedantic in nature. Music, Sculptures, writing, whatever, it's all art. I would also like to point out the difference between favorite and greatest.
I would measure somebody up as greatest by a number of factors: 1. magnitude of works (number, scale, diversity), 2. effects of works on the world (how many books have been written about the person???), 3. test of time...
are all the obvious ones i can think of atm... |

this topic covers such a broad area. Artistic minds??? hmm...
I'd have to go with Socrates, Plato, and Michaelangelo...Each 1 in his own way paved the road to supreme wisdom and understanding...Socrates/Plato did so through intellectual debates whereas Michaelangelo did so through his art and creativity...I could choose a million more people, but these 3 were the 1st to hit me |

There was no one Renaissance man. A lot of figures in the 15th and 16th century were deemed Renaissance men. Da Vinci, Erasmus, Michelangelo, Brunelleschi, Alberti and Medici
Each is respectable in different areas of Art, paintings, sculpture, architecture etc.. |

Some of my favorite artistic minds....
Favorite painters: Depends on the era. Twentieth century would be a tossup between Joan Miró, Salvador Dalí and Pablo Picasso. Those Spaniards were simply unstoppable. I also have a soft spot for other painters like the Dutch masters, Rembrandt and Van Gogh. Also the French impressionists like Monet.
Favorite architect: Antonio Gaudí hands down. Can anything be more amazing than La Sagrada Familia or any of his other buildings in Barcelona?? I'm also loving the current work of Dutch superstar architect Rem Koolhaas (trance is not the only art that the Dutch are internationally renowned for nowadays ;))
Favorite musical minds: The three Bs pretty much tell the story of how Western art music developed from the German/Vienna side: Bach, Beethoven, Brahms. Also have to give a shoutout to Mozart, his structure in composition is just godlike. I love the Twentieth century Russians more than any other group: Stravinsky, Shostakovich, Prokofiev etc. Also the French impressionists like Debussy and Ravel. Minimalists like Steve Reich and Terry Reily. John Cage, Brian Eno, Kraftwerk. And then there is Tiesto.... :disbelief |

Hmm, well, let's see...
In art, I'd go for Dali, although I like Van Gogh, Escher and most of the Rennaisance artists too.
In architecture it would definitely be Gaudi...although recently I'm starting to like some more modern buildings too. Unfortunately I don't know who constructed them.
Now, as far as music goes, aside from many trance producers, I like Vivaldi, Beethoven and many medieval producers. From the more modern artists I'd mention Jean Michel Jarre, Vangelis and Kraftwerk. |
