OMG adam!!!
when greg and i saw this movie we called it the asian version of dances with wolves
i thought this movie SUCKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
predictable plot, and tom cruise was not convincing at all
UBER CHEESE!
********** plot spoiler**************
okay so at the end if tom cruise was supposed to have become a samuri warrior, shouldnt he have also killed himself???
and what was with that english photography dude? he was horrible!!!!
was it really necessary for him to show up at the end of the move "here have my journals for your book" barf....
another thing... if a soldier (american) is in uniform, part of the uniform is the HAT, and time cruise never once put anything on that scraggly hair the whole move.. and the beard was disgusting

the thing about killing yourself after having been defeated in battle was the samuari's way of having their honor... he may have been considered a samuari but his mentality wasn't to have his honor that way, it was to make good on his promise to return to the girl

i dont know what his role was honestly but i didn't think it was that horrible or detracted that much from the story line to have him involved

when you're in a formal uniform (which he was for most of the times he was wearing an american uniform) it isn't always required to wear a hat... and lots of people in the army back then had huge disgusting beards (take a look at a picture of stonewall jackson or anyone else from the post civil war period)... besides all that, his whole purpose in the movie was him being a renegade soldier of sorts, not the most professional soldier so he probably could have given a about proper military customs

it sounds like you're nitpicking about inconsequential details but that's your opinion and i have mine... i liked it alot and you can tell that they paid alot of attention to detail on most aspects... the only thing i noticed that isn't accurate is that although their sword was considered equivalent to their soul, they did use rifles at that time period whenever they were available |

okay...basically this movie is fantasy. know this ahead of time. Based on truth but no where near it. the samurai class was in fact the elite social class of Japan and that class was losing its hold on the country thanks to the reborn empirial system. Basically the movie makes it seem that the samurai were great, peasant people who wanted basic life and now the government is switching to the bad western influence. essentially they wanted their (land, title, etc.) back so they could have power again. japan was locked away from outside influence but with the new emperor came the realization that japan needed to modernize (which gives us their great ability to make the godly nintendo) thus, out with the old(samauri) in with the new(westernized system).
now about the movie...basically a mix of other war movies. i love war movies so i thought this would be a good one. it just reminded me of glory, dances with wolves, and the last of mohicans all smashed into one. in fact, the first battle is almost the exact same first battle that we see the 54th massachusetts in glory. out of the smoke in the woods come the samauri/rebels. tom cruise even utters the same words to his troops when the samauri charge that matthew broderick speaks to his troops when the rebels charge. total ripoff.
also, guns were introduced to japan a long time before 1870. they knew how to use them, especially the samurai who were the main warriors. swords and bows were their main weapons but they also used guns. not a single one uses them in the movie. but this is the point since the samurai are supposed to be heroic and use only ancient customs.
tom cruise just doesnt fit the part. he seems to over-act it. the other members of the cast did well, especially the head samurai guy. the british dude made no sense to me either. also i can never understand movies where horses are the biggest targets and never get hit. tom and his boys charge and get tore up by the gatlin guns but not one damn horse dies. amazing! even samurai horses are all powerful. well this is a long review and it seems like a history lesson but i found a lot of faults with the movie. it is a purely entertaining movie but i do not find it close to that. i figured a lot of people would not have liked it but whatever. a better movie coming out will be cold harbor. guarntee it! well it better be or ill look like an idiot.
GRADE: Last Samurai: C
...wait for the dvd |

i know its incredibly late but i just saw that movie and thought it was pretty good, well worth the 5 bucks i spent to see it.
there were some faults historically, but not enough to ruin the movie. i really enjoyed it becasue i read the book shogun recently too. this movie is so similar to that book it must be loosely based off it. and that book is so good too, prob one of the best that i have read. |
