The La Presse website

www.cyberpresse.ca/reseau/perso_2003/index.shtml
offers readers a vote for the "person of the Year" among a list of individuals who have "won" in their individual category. For the category of global politics, Yasser Arafat is named.

The website text reads as follows: "Yasser Arafat marked international news in 2003. He handed over partial powers to a prime minister; encouraged peace talks in the middle east, while threatened with death by the Israeli state. For his courage and tenacity in trying to advance his people's cause, Cyberpresse names him Person of the Year for 2003 in the area of International Affairs."

Readers now have the option to vote for Arafat among 12 category winners for the overall person of the year.

It is urgent that we write to La Presse to denounce the choice of Arafat as candidate for the title of person of the year and insist that his name be removed from the website.

Personally my choice would have been Saddam. He has clearly been taking a much more active role, with greater effect, to prevent his people from suffering under an "illegal occupation". He defintely should have won this award, he has done so much to try and fight to return the peace and stability that exist in the middle east just a year ago. I don't see why they didn't give him the nobel peace prize for that matter either.:conf:

What else do you expect from the Quebecois? They're not even real French - they just try to act like it.

I see no real problem in nominating arafat as the man of the year, but the way they describe him is simply disgusting

I wish I could steal millions from my people, enjoy popular world wide support at the expense of their strife/misery, while doing little to nothing to end their suffering but make huge strides towards strengthening my consolidation of power, and through all of this ... retain the love and the support of those people. The guy's a genious!

no ing way i'm letting you bitch at La Presse... I think many western newspapers can learn alot from them about how to cover news.

When you name a person, personnality of the year, it doesn't mean that this person was an angel. It means, that this guy marked news and affected many issues.

stupid kids:rolleyes:

Of course ... the same thing applies to time magazine when hitler was considered as being one of the candidates for person of the century. That doesn't provide an exemption from criticism

dude, you can criticize Arafat, but as far as bitching the newspaper and ask people to spam the editorialist is something else. Thats where you should draw the line.

As for that bastard Hitler, are you telling me that he didnt mark the year he was named "man of the year" ? He marked the whole century...

Hmmm, you are correct. However the selection of Arafat or Hitler reflects the bias of western media (actually all media in general). Ultimately, there are much greater impacts on on the world when you take into consideration the number of people impacted by african dictators or others such as Stalin. I guess I'm just infuriated by teh lack of press time given to those who deserve greater attention.

Btw, what kind of paper is La presse?
