I know this has been the subject of a few threads now.. and have seen many occasions in the past of people labeling good producers as 'selling out' or 'going commercial' and just wanted to mention a few things here that people should think about.. I will use G&D as an example..
How long have they been making music for? how much of their lives have they POURED into their music and everything that they've had to do to get where they are, and get their productions to the quality that they are being recognized for?
When you devote yourself to something so intensely, somewhere along the road certain other areas of your life usually end up being sacrificed in order to focus on your work. [I for one sacrificed a girlfriend at one time, but ended up with the best mix cd release I ever have done.. relationships can DEFINETELY suffer from time to time when you find yourself in an 'either..or' situation]
Think about all this..now, ask yourself how long does it take for one of us to go and grab virtually any one of their tracks off the hub? Of all the G&D tracks that are on the hub, how many of those people actually went out and bought the track?
How many amazing tracks are there that have been produced by people that don't make NEARLY the amount of money they deserve to for their dedication and quality end result? Record labels going under at times leaving us going "how did that happen.. some of their tracks were so good?"
Now, think about if you were one of the rare and lucky people that has devoted so much to it.. that you find yourself being asked to do a remix for one of the biggest artists in the world.. and getting paid a lot of money to do it.
For all the hard work that you've put into your music to get where you are... do you NOT deserve to finally get some generous compensation and reward for your talent and hard work?
Do you think if any of us were in that position, that we really would so riteously refuse the cheque and opportunity to take on such a project?
It sucks when people suddenly throw out comments about you being 'in it for the money' because usually it just comes down to the fact that it's nice to be rewarded for years of hard work.. with something that you can actually use to pay your rent, or redo your studio.. or maybe even use to take a vacation sometime!
Truthfully, I think in most of these cases, and definetely I think with G&D, the artists aren't 'selling out' and putting out a track that they totally compromised their sound and creativity in the name of fitting into the pop mould. They aren't really putting something out that they aren't happy with.. just to make a buck.
Do you think that a lot of the people that you see in music videos are really a lot more talented than say G&D? These instant popstar types who come out of nowhere and get showered with fame and fortune?
Do they really deserve to make way more than people who are way more dedicated and talented?
no I say.. Good job I say to Dave and Josh for all the dope tracks they have given us.. It's nice to see you guys doing so well and getting paid for all that you've put in to get here.

I don't think they sold out, they just remixed a commerical track into something that's their own style, they didn't make a commercial track.
And how many average Britney fans will even hear that remix, or know who Gabriel and Dresden are anyway? They're not sold out, hardly anybody who's not into their prog/trance has even heard of them.
I'm not trying to say they're lyk sooo underground, I'm just saying I agree that they're not selling out. |

if G&D really sold out, then i'm sure they could get a LOT more remixing jobs, and doing ty work for lots of money.
i'm sure any remix they do is cause they KNOW they can make a quality track out of it, and not cause of the fat paycheque... doesn't matter who they remix or how much money they get... as long as they stay true to themselves, they haven't sold out... |

they aren't sell-outs. who ever said they ever wanted to make pure
trance / house music? on an interview conducted by jason benttley on
kcrw 89.9 two nights ago (a local l.a. radio station sponsored by
nation public radio), they stated that they want to make club music
for the non-electronic music listener by remixing big artists so
that people can enjoy both good vocals and melody...
so there you have it! :gsmile:

Truthfully though, with the amount of VERY credible respectable people that support them saying otherwise, and considering their consistent success and great reviews praising them on so many occasions.. would that really be a fair label to stick on them?
Or would it just be fair to say that you prefer a more deep underground style of music?

| This thread was very much needed. There's too much of this sell out talk and I'm glad a see a lot of people who agree. DJ Nemeis couldn't have put it any better.And just because they decided to remix more commercial artists doesn't mean nothign to me in terms of G & D selling out. It's good to here somehting different once in a while. Next time you think of calling some one a sell out or commercialized, think of something you like to do and think if someone offered you money to do it, would you deny the offer? |

| If the actual remixes were good, then who cares WHO they remixed. When MaRt remixed an old Madonna track in the amatuar forum, no-one slagged him for 'selling out', in actual fact the song was absolutley amazing. |

I totally agree with what you're saying. I mean, it is kind of funny how people would like to use terms like "sell-out" and "going commercial," when one or two songs from a different genre is mixed into trance. People seem to forget that it is trance - not pop, eventhough it was from a 'pop' source. It is quite bad how judgements and thoughts about dj's are made after sampling one or two songs from them. You know, every dj has their good tracks and their bad tracks.
Remember, trance isnt just beats. It is the most versatile type of music out there, which includes many of other genres'. For example, Kelis - milkshake...there is more trance than what we see.a |

that doesn't mean . i like steve lawler too (even if his style has gone downhill recently) but g & d play a different genre and a different sound. you don't make any sense. |
