And The World Player Of The Year Is (pg. 2)

I don't know how you can doubt of Zidane's merits this year. I think he should win all the awards every year, he is amazing, he can't be compared with any other footballer nowadays.

I watch every match of Real Madrid and I see Figo's work, Ronaldo's power or Raul's bravery, but Zidane makes everything easy. He is slow, but his movements, controls and passes are not of this world. Last's week match against Deportivo de la Coruña was an exhibition of Zidane's quality.

When Florentino Perez paid nearly 80 million euros for him I thought it was a crazy thing, but now I think it was well paid, he deserves it.

CONGRATULATIONS ZIZOU!!!

I really dont think that zidane deserves it. He is getting to old. Tiery henry would have been my first pic. Or Ruud. I would like to see a defender win it one of these days!

Whats that got to do with it?
Anyway, imo this award is a complete joke. Its nothing to do with who plays best, its just a popularity contest. :whip:

Henry plays stylish football and therefore the pundits love him, and as many people recieve their opinions from media hype it doesn't surprise me Henry recieved a lot of votes. He doesn't however deserve to win imo, however 'unfair' it may seem to give the award to Zidane for the third time in his career.

Ronaldo's name has become so big he's become something of an icon in football and he'll always be up there, but people are getting a bit sick of all his hype now. Not so with Zidane who has never recieved the same type of hype, more a worldwide respect. That's because he's the complete player and adds so much to his team. I have no problem with it going to Zidane.

If Beckham continues playing as he is for Real he will have to be considered for the top 3 next year. Henry has another year to keep at it and Nedved deserves another look in too.

If Nedved shines in the euro cup , that will further maximize his repect for POTY.This year Henry should have won it, I really thought Henry would win easily but o well you gotta respect Zidanes talent..

So nedved won european player of the year so he must have obviously been recognised:)

What about Kobe? Kidding. It's funny how in USA we declare teams and/or players world champions when it encompasses only USA, but after reading this thread, I think the same can be said about Europe. I honestly have never heard of this guy Zidane, but of course I'm being ignorant since I don't follow soccer (football) like Europeans do...

btw...what do you guys think about the MLS in America?

Well to be honest, if you do not follow follow football, how are you supposed to know who zidane is? i do not follow baseball nor american football, but i can not tell you any one player of either. Football has world player of the year and European player of the year, with Zidane and Nedved winning the titles respectively. Zidane, i think, was bought for £50m or something like that.

MLS? well, if support grew and stopped being so damn defensive and worrying it make take over their traditional beloved sports that are already well estiblished in usa, then i think that football would be a success! This will only happen though in about 40/50 years though because kids are becoming to play it at school now and is becoming very popular! plus think how cheap it is for schools to do. No need to buy lots of bats, hats, padding etc..., all you need is a ball! lol

Obviously that is just an opinion!

Hehe, soccer (football) is already played at a competitive level in the states when kids are 5. I myself played competitive soccer when I was around 7 until I was 10. All the way through the college level, soccer is played throughout the states. It's just that the other "pro" leagues like the NBA, NFL, MLB and the NHL to a lesser extent have strangleholds on the love and interest level of the american audience in general.

Well then football will never become popular then in USA. MLS is of a poor quality. Few decente players and people use America to finish of their careers because of the relaxed lifestyle, nice weather (in diff parts of usa) etc... and they're usually of a very substandard quality from what you would expect from any, for e.g., premiership footballer. I also got the feeling that most people who watch football or enjoy it in USA follow European teams, rather than their own MLS. Am i right in this?

yea I'm one of those who follow teams from other countrys other than MLS. I liked the MLS when it started but it never grew on me.Inter de Milan and Real Madrid are my teams but I'm Colombian so I also follow alot of south american futbol like the brazilian,Colombian, argentinan Leagues and the libertadores cup(S.A Champions League).I agree with what tiestofanmatt wrote about how players come here to chill, but now that freddy adu has signed here maybe he can bring some respect to this league which even had a team here in south Florida where Soccer is pretty popular and still coudn't make it.Fans here were smart enough not to go see below level soccer/football.
