So what do you guys think is the best way to start off a mix cd? Slowly get into w/ a mellow track or just jump right into it w/ something bangin. I personally think I like it when they start off kind of slow, then build up by the 3-4th song keep it going for a few slow down for a couple and then end off strong. What do you guys think???
Eugene
I think it should start out bangin'!
Remember, if it's for home listening, you gotta grab the listener's attention in the first several tracks! It's not like at a club, where you can gradually build... I definitely go for initial energy!!

... adding to my previous post:

As a sidenote today I got Gatecrasher: Discotech Generation, and the first 40 minutes were slow and mellow, I was bored so much I don't even want to listen to the rest, and to the 2nd CD! My first impression is the first several tracks! I already know I wasted my money...

Depends on who your mix cd is for.
I still think you should start off w/ the usual gradual build up.
Just make sure its not that mellow.
Also depends on your genre of music...

So all depends on different factors.

personally I like to build, but u only have 80 minutes to work with right? So that like 11-12 maybe 13 tracks if u r lucky. 1 is a good enuf build if u chose the right track.

Gatecrahser Discotech Gen sucks? Yea rite man...that cd is so rough. If you listen 2 it carefully...u can see how much work really went into it.

U just gotta be a fan of that sub genre.
Listen 2 the bass...its way different than what most ppl are usualy used to. Take it for another listen...studys show the more u listen to the music, the more u like it.

And if not, then just give it 2 a friend or somthing...haha u might even be able to exchange it cuz Gatecrasher Cd'z are expencive.

As for this thread...it really depends on what the DJ infront of you plays...if he ends big, then u must bring it down a bit(not a lot, just a bit)build up near the middle or the end.

i'd like to go for hard banging agressive tunes to start and to finish a cd. all the mellow, trancey, ambient stuff gets plugged in the middle.

The funny thing is, I got the U.S. version of that CD. There's also an import version but it costs more -- around $37. I got the one that costs $20. Apparently it doesn't have some of the best tracks of the European version.

As somebody here once said, in perfect English... Me needs melody ;)

first i decide the feel i want the mix to have.. the emotion of the set.. often inspired by a few tracks that really have it and have a certain sound to them.. i think of more than how bangin or chillin my tracks are when i sequence them.. I consider where its all going..
take people somewhere
all of my mixes have themes and titles, its not something cool to toss in at the end.. keep it in mind when first choosing the tracks and sequencing them
i suppose some have more depth to their mixes than others,, the sad reality is most people are too ed to notice
but if only one person gets it, its all worth it :)

i like to build up at the start but not for long, one maybe two tracks is enough, then it gets banging, then more uplifting towards the end, something really uplifting but with real energy at the end though. i think a lot of mix cds do take a long time to build up. my last mix was as follows (i know theres a lot of 'big' tunes in there, but i don't care!)

1. fu man choo - outlaw (praha mix)
2. push - the legacy
3. marc et claude - tremble (cj stone remix)
4. utah saints - lost vagueness (oliver lieb remix)
5. mo hawk - previous years (original mix)
6. slusnik luna - sun
7. motivation - para mi
8. three drives - sunset on ibiza
9. abigail - you set me free (vocal mix)
10. rank 1 - such is life (marco v remix)
11. dj tiesto - urban train (original mix)
12. ultra vibe - choose freedom (original mix)
13. mauro picotto - like this like that
14. ralphie b - massive

its only really the first tune, possibly the second that build up this mix

I was invited to a party last week, for a friends b-day.There was about 50 people there,he had a big gazebo (and i mean big) with a dancefloor inside it,and a dj.I knew the dj's style(garage) and his skill(e),so i thought it would be a good idea to take along a few records and my pioneer cd unit.I asked my mate who was hosting the party if he would mind me goin on later on in the night,to witch he replied "Please man, please!"

So i had a few drinks, got pretty drunk, and just enjoyed the show, until i thought all the people around me where ready :-)

I asked the dj to off (Politely) and he did, then i jumped in behind the decks, and all my friends started cheering, cuz they knew what was comin!

The last song the dj played was some cheesy garage tune that ended with a long, dying, droned out synth effect,so i blended it with my first tunes intro, and it sounded absolutely mint, and then the beat dropped in and they started goin ballistic!

Over the next couple of hours i played a quality little set of mostly old tunes, but they loved it!I recorded all to minidisc and have it as mp3,im gonna upload it to my locker if anybody is interested!

Anyway,heres the tracklist for it:

Kaycee:Millenium strings
Dj tiesto:Urban train
Cosmic gate:Fire wire (Scot project mix)
Avancada:Go!
Green court:Inside your gates (Cosmic gate remix)
Cosmic gate:Exploration of space
Mauro picotto:Iguana (Megavoices mix)
Mauro picotto:Lizard (Megavoices mix)
Mauro picotto:komodo (Tea mix)
Dj tiesto:Sparkles (Airscape mix)
Dj tiesto:Sparkles (Transa remix)
Binary finary:1999 (Gouryella remix)
vengaboys:Kiss (Airscape mix)
Gouryella:walhalla (Original)
Pulp victim:The world 99
Lange feat the morrighan:Follow me (Original mix)
Vimana:We came
System f:Out of the blue (Firestar remix)

I am being completley honest when i say that set of tunes,in that order, blows your crowd away!
