The name "psy"trance refers to "psychedelic", as much of the music was originally intended as an accompaniment to drug induced psychedelic episodes (at least that's the impression I get from much of the online psytrance community). Psytrance just kinda has its own vibe/attitude/instrumentation that distinguishes it from other electronic genres. It can range from chilled and layed back to dancefloor mayhem, it's really just a matter of where the producer goes with it.

That depends... Are you going to listen to Shpongle or Pleiadians? The Infinity Project or Toi Doi? Even the artist is not always a good indication of what to expect. Take Doof or Total Eclipse for example; some of their songs are pounding and others are smooth and relaxing. Psytrance can be extremely hard or extremely chill, it just depends on the song.

Let me begin by saying I have extremely limited experience listening to techno, and what little experience I've had I didn't enjoy. With that said, psytrance seems, to me, to be more subtle and intricate than techno (technophiles feel free to correct me).

Technically, no, although some people will tell you they are. Goa was originally created by splicing and reconstructing industrial beats back in the 70's as a backdrop to the party scene in Goa (India) during that time. Some people liked the sound and decided to make goa music from scratch rather than "remixing" other tracks that weren't originally created for such purposes. A lot of the instrumentation and song structure in psytrance and goa overlap, which leads to the confusion over whether they are the same thing. In my mind, goa and psytrance are like two points on the same continuum; a song can be legitimate goa, or legitimate psytrance, or some kind of hybrid in between. Goa tends to have a more "organic" feel to it where psytrance is usually more "spacey" or "sci-fi" sounding. Many songs include both elements, which is why the two genres tend to blend together.
At least that's my take on things. The more you encounter the music and the culture, the more equipped you will be to form your own understanding of the genres. |

wow, you seem very knowledgable !! thanks for your input, it helped me out alot :) since Goa and Psy are two different genres, can you give me some goa artists as well ?? maybe i will be able to hear the difference myself.. thanks !! |

I'd go straight to the source and find pretty much anything by "The Nommos". Unfortunately they've only released three or four songs (although they have a new album coming out soon), but Goa Gil (who is the core of The Nommos) is basically the godfather of Goa music, so that's where to look if you want the authentic Goa sound. Gil posts his current favorite tracks over at http://www.goagil.com/chart.html so you can check that out if you want some more recommendations.
Most of the artists I've already mentioned in this thread qualify as a bit of both goa and psy, so they aren't too useful in distinguishing the genres. If you want to do a simple one-to-one comparison, compare "Astrix & Atomic Pulse - Scientific Reality" (psy) to "The Nommos - Djembe" (goa). I realize it's a vast oversimplification to try and pigeonhole entire genres into two songs, but I think the comparison might be useful nonetheless. |
