decks or digital decoders?

PVD was in south africa 2 weeks ago. On one of his interviews on SA television he indicated that he doesnt use vinyls anymore. He now uses digital vinyls and a laptop for all his gigs for the past 8 months. What he does is that he selects the track on the laptop and it decodes onto the digital vinyls on his decks.

When i went to his gigs in SA he WAS actually doing this. At first i was wondering why he was keep looking on the laptop and hardly changing vinyls (in fact i dont recall him changing vinyls at all)...

Is this the way dj's are going now? Does tiesto do this too??

its called final scratch. im amazed you havent heard about it yet.. but it is an interesting piece of equipment that is for sure.

it wont 'take over' vinyl, but it is the way some big DJs are going.. either because theyre promoting stanton, or because they really just hate lugging 100s of vinyls with them... you gotta admit, a laptop case and 2 vinyl is a hell of a lot lighter than 140...

some djs will use it, but i know that vinyl is here to stay.. at least in some form or another

PvD's really got a lot of courage experimenting with technology.Salute.

But,what happens if the software crashes ? Maybe its not using windows ? :conf:
And hows does he store the tunes in his laptop ? MP3s ??

Final Scratch is only for Mac/Linux so yup, u won't have to worry nearly as much about crashing.

You can pretty much play any audio data file i believe, but I think the most common used is AIFF, I don't kno much about this format but i'm guessing it's high quality

:waits for some lamer to flame you about your pvd comment

there should be a Flame Alliance for all those retards out there or maybe there already is one, oh no i didn't use the search button, there's another excuse to start flaming me, how fun

I said its really cool that PvD is moving with the times and I salute him for that. For a DJ of his stature,he runs some risk of attracting bad publicity for ditching the "good old vinyl".I've seen him live and this fact changes nothing. All that matters is that I see him, hear great tunes, smell weed and feel the vibe ! After all..whats electronic music without the use of some mean digital machines...

It is not only for Mac/linux. You can also run Final Scratch on a PC running Windows.

i have yet to use one of these beautiful toys, but it also depends on how much HDD space you have. since mp3 files take up roughly 1/5th --> 1/10th of a wave file, depending on the storage space he has, and how fast it takes to load each file, i would guess he encodes his .wav files to a high mp3 rate and uses those. if the software were to crash or what not, he prob. totes around cd backups of his music (and maybe a few pieces of vinyl)

Hello mate, another Saffer! Welcome. Which gig did you go to? We stay in Cape Town but decided its not often that you get to see Paul so we flew up to Joburg on the Sat morning for his gig up there. I must say I had a frikken awesome time, both set were totally mind blowing. I managed to sneak 25 mins of Paul's time for an interview. It will be up soon on www.mio.co.za, but will let you know when.

The files he uses on his mac are 16bit AIFF files. Paul says "I don't use ty mp3 files". AIFF is very similar to WAV but just the MAC version

Thats a great feeling, yes...but its probably quite different when you get sent hundreds of promos and unsigned productions each week.
