Bottom line: We are spoiled here in TO
As a DJ and writer for another music website, I speak with a lot of DJ's/promoters and fans of the music all over North America and I can safely tell you they all envy the Toronto club scene....in fact many rate it the best this side of the Atlantic......those are some big compliments and we should not soon forget that.
One of the luxeries we have is CHOICE. If Guv (or any club) gets stall for anyone, there are many clubs/events/parties to change things up and freshen your experience....which simply DOES NOT exist in most other cities. THe problem I still see is that the masses still stick to the big name events then bemoan the problems they entail (crowding/price etc)
There are countless world-class nights going on every week with Toronto's AMAZING local talent....I won't name any because there are too many and they all deseve equal promotion but dig around!!!!
I understand what you are saying sufee....believe me...we all have our x-mas wishes for the scene but let's all not forget that we are still quite lucky.
Besides...look at it this way....if that couple hated the tunes...maybe they won't come back.....that's two less fakers getting in our way.....the glass half full and all that jazz :)

agreed. any club looks lik ethat when the lights go on. the last time i was at a club when the lights went on was at system (shine 2-max graham) the time before that was KH for Tiesto. They both looked equally vile.
i like system a lot. the crowd for the most part is more genuine. I've met some extremely nice ppl there. the staff is really good as well. the sound could use some work..but all in all it's a great club. |

| About ignorant losers like "guacamole girl" you had mentioned - I had a similar experience at PVD when I walked by this idiot who saw my shirt which said "PVD" on it.. and he goes.. pvd..what's that.. I point to the stage and kindof laugh.. and he goes "Oh well wtf like I'm suppose to know that". :P You run into those people all the time - it's simply unavoidable. There's ALWAYS going to be someone at a club no matter what club it is that is a moron or pisses you off in any way. People go to places like Guv for many different reasons - for the music, for the drugs, just because it's popular... it really doesn't matter as long as you know why your there that's all that counts. |

and it doesn't happen in toronto only, all over n00bs are invading super clubs because its the cool place to be. Hundreds of times I've been asked "that dj is reallly good who is he" about lawler, avb, deep dish, etc....
just don't pay attention too much to that, its part of clubland.
what is defienatly wrong tho is when someone asks the djs to play hiphop:whip: :whip: :whip: :whip: :whip: :whip: I go nuts:mad:  |

isn't partying supposed to be about going out with your friends, having a great time, listening to DJs spin wicked tunes, maybe meeting some cool new people too?
Unfortunately, I see sooooo many people bitching about the ginos, the asians, the druggies, security, the crowds, the lack of a crowd, the glowsticks, the boozeheads, whatever. Jeez...chill the f**k out and just enjoy yourself! :)
sufee_b, some little "guacamolee girl" shouldn't be able to ruin your night, or even just bother you to the extent that you need to start a thread about it. F*** her and her ignorant friend. ;) Personally, I'd have given her my best *WTF?* look and said "um, that's Marco V! Pfft..." and walked off. Maybe next time, she'd bother to see who's on the bill before going somewhere (I guess I do have a *bit* of a snob in me too, lol).
Yes, I don't care for the ginos who go there only because it's the "cool" place to go and who bring there hostile yo-you-stepped-on-my-shoes mentality with them...yes, I roll my eyes when some world renowned DJ gets the brush off from some ignorant idiot who's favourite DJ is MC Mario...yes, seeing some messy fool passed out in the lounge or puking in the bathroom is pretty lame. But I accept that I'm probably going to see that pretty much everytime I go to Guv or just about anywhere else.
...but I have no problem tuning out all of these things...I go, I party my ass off, and I ALWAYS have a good time anyway :D
*I've been home sick for a couple of days...forgive the little rant* :) |

| i'm not a big fan of these threads because it's all about criticism of one group or another. basically, it comes down to people WHOM you believe are ignorant. i may find marco v brilliant while someone else says he's not very good. we are entitled to our opinions. just let it be that this is fact and will be forever. i'm still a big fan of oakenfold but many have said he is a dinosaur and has been. that's fine, but i grew up listening to they guy and remain still. i'm not going to let someone else's opinion dictate where i go to party and enjoy listening to music. like the other thread, where ryan parks asks who people want to see at system and someone says, "is this tranceaddict?" system on friday plays prog and house on saturdays! TAs play out in the vip lounge. i'm probably a familiar face to many of you, but i remain discreet. ;) i've had people come up to me and ask if so and so is playing yet? and i answer that they've been playing for the last hour and keep a straight face. not all of us are informed or trainspotters! so what if people don't recognize dj faces? just enjoy the music and don't let people bug you, whether you believe people are being ignorant to YOUR superior music or not. |

Well at least he knew the music was good and was curious to know who it was - Unlike some. |

why so bitter?
some people just want to have a good time.
who cares if you don't know the dj?
personally, I don't know how alot of the djs look like, so I often ask people about who is spining, esp. when I come in late
and for girls, sometimes guys might ask you b/c they want to talk ;) |

I will agree that System ain't the prettiest of clubs to hang out in. But I don't hang out there for the decor or comfy couches. (have you sat on that springy thing near the back by the breaks room?...OMG)
I frequent System due to the fact that they keep dishing out killer lineups. I will agree though that for a place that calls itself System "Sound" bar that they might want to focus more of their energy and money on the Sound (especially in the VIP room...and the poor poor Breaks room) and not on paper mashe dudes with fogging doobies. What's with that?
My eyes are closed most time when the beats are good so the annoying people, posers, glowsticks, bad attitudes and such...fade away. And when my eyes are open and I am ready to find a friendly face to chat with...there is always a TA nearby to make the night a good one.
Personally, I am somewhat thankful that System keeps itself a bit grungy...that way the Top 40 crews who typically stand about in the Guv asking who the DJ is ...when Armin, or Lawler, or PVD are up there pouring their hearts out, won't want to hang out with us in the dark pit we call home at System ...because it isn't cool enough or flashy enough. fine by me.
one final note...no matter what the venue is...I am always comforted knowing that somewhere out on every dancefloor there is another TA family member enjoying the beats just as much as me! :D |

We can bitch and complain all we want but the scene isn't going to change. sufee_b, what you'll come to realize is that when you party with TAs all this doesn't really matter because you are surrounded by friends who are there for the same reasons you are. |
I dunno about friends, but when i was surrounded by you guys at Dumonde, it was nice to know that there were people there who knew who the ing DJ's were!
:)
Sufee - for your sake... get to know the TA's here, they will be all you need.
It's either that, or learning Karate so you can go nuts and beat the crap out of any idiot who says "This DJ sucks" when it's someone like Marco V. That'd be way cooler to see than to hear the more reasonable yet sardonic answer of "what the do you know?" |

my bad, I read too much into it :toothless
Ignorance really only bugs me when someone is negatively critical about the DJ in question...and it's not really about it bugging me...I just wonder why they bothered going.
If by some chance I don't know anything about the headlining DJ I'm going to see, I try to find out something about them ahead of time (like at least downloading a few tracks)...and if it's a genre I don't know much about, I'd find out how respected or popular they are...I'd feel silly not knowing anything about techno, but going to see someone like Svan Vath or Mistress B and saying "wow, this DJ sucks" in a room full of their fans, lol...especially true of a big night at Guv...because I *know* MO will build up the night so well and I'd be disappointed if the next DJ's style wasn't my taste.
Maybe I'm just a little pickier about what I go to and I pay closer attention to who's spinning? |
