do you consider christmas to be a religious holiday? (pg. 2)

Now i'm not big on religion, so correct me if i'm wrong, but I was informed that Christmas (originally) didn't have anything to do with Christianity. It was a Pegan festival that was celebrated on the 6th January.

When some Roman emporer came to power (near the end of the Roman Empire age), he decided to move it to 25th December, because it coincided with another festival celebrated by his religion that was performed to celebrate and worship one of the Roman Gods, the Sun God. As the 25th December was closer to the winter solstice (when the days start getting lighter, thus signifying the triumph of the sun over the darkness) than 6th January, he moved it just to make things more convenient.

Over the years, Christianity became the primary religion in the Roman Empire, and so the Sun God festival thing was forgotten, leaving everyone celebrating only Christmas, as we still do to this day.

Wasn't that a charming story?? ;)

I'm an agnostic-border line athiest, so it has more of a cultural value than a religious one.

Christmas wouldn't exist if it weren't for Jesus's birth anyway. I figure going to church one day out of the year couldn't hurt. :)

true, but i've still not managed to make it to mass for 3 years :(

gonna go some day soon..

i am totally against religion in school, and i like many others view xmas as a religous holiday. my old high school had santa stuff up everywhere (as all u.s. schools do) and i was against it. so me and my friend went to the office and tried to find someone there to make our point to. i am not very religous but he is, a very devoted morman. so we had some good points from both sides, they kept laying down these lines about how 'santa' is 'non secular' because its not the 'manger scene' or stuff like that... what a crock of . hypocrits... oh well, i do like xmas, i just dont see why atheist, jewish, etc.. etc.. should be forced to associate with a predominantly christain holiday.

it has to be associated with religion because that is what the whole holiday is based around, the birth of jesus. I'm not terribly religious but even i reconize that. Otherwise what you are celebrating isnt really xmas, its just a vacation.

I don't go to church every sunday and i don't pray before every meal...basically i hardly ever go to church and i don't pray at all.

For me Christmas has more of a family value than religious. I've been brought up in a very catholic family and i went through all the stages of believing and not believing in Christmas. I enjoy it very much as my family cracks me up every time they get together. Christmas is fun but do I consider it to be religious holiday?...nope, not me.

just a time for the family to come together as im not religious
