its good to know that im not the only one with this "dj's curse"
it IS a pain in the ass, learning the beat structure, you get sick of tracks fast.. gahhh.. |

Im maybe a couple steps further than you in the process of learning, and Id have to say the most helpful, and sobering, this is the tape yourself and listen to how bad you really are. It hurts to hear it but it has helped.

Practice, practice, practice.
Even when you hate it, if you want to get good.
Consciously making the effort to learn your tunes definitely takes the fun out, so I don't do that. I just spin songs until I just "know" where is supposed to happen. After doing it for a year or so, you'll start to kind of automatically "know" how every song works (not literally of course ;)), but you'll have a sense of how 99% of tracks work. And then you'll be able to pick up something you've never heard, and mix beautifully. |

Until we get that down, there isnt much else to do. Get the mixes right, then concentrate on style when u can mix blindfolded with only i hand.
For now, mess with the EQ..but to do that well u need to know your music inside out. |

There aren't many tips that can be given, other than to keep practicing. I used to get so frustrated when I didn't know what I was doing, and then one day it just all made sense. That feeling is awsome!...just keep playing around man, you'll get it!
Peace,

Hey InsomnEac, since I was at step 10 of your list last January:eyes:, maybe I should tell you how I got there. What the others said is very true: Practice. But I'd only do it if you feel like spinning (which you should all the time). I wouldn't make a schedule like 2 hours practice a day, that'll take the fun out of it. Next step is recording your mixes and analyzing your weaknesses. I was so obsessed with perfection that I didn't give a single mix to ANY of my friends until about 1 1/2 year after I started, when I finally felt like it's good enough to give it away (today these first mixes make me laugh, cause they were still pretty bad from my point of view now).
Then, you can also go to clubs and concentrate on what the DJ is doing. You don't have to watch him, try finding out what he's doing by listening closely. When you like something, try it at home. When you hate something, avoid doing this at home (or at a club, later).
When you think you are REALLY good enough to spin, give away a demo that kicks ass. This should be above average, but not too good (like doing it on your PC with CoolEdit pro or ProTools) cause when you get to spin live and it's not anywhere near what you did on tape, they are not gonna keep you.
Get to know some guys who organize the parties/clubs in your area. Get to know DJs / or DJ's girlfriends...(has worked for me;))
When you get to play, never turn down an offer cause they want you to play the opening/end when nobody is there. You have to go through this. Be persistend. Practice. I feel like I can still get better after 8 years....and beware....once you get to play with Taucher, you will be amazed what a crazy wacko he is:clown: |

grr....so frustrating..I just cant get it!!!! GOD DAMN!!! I just wanna quit now.. I mean, I can mix n everything..but not beatmatch.(ie I use hella lot of EQ work and volume work + crossfade) and it isnt flawless @ all. Sure everynow and then I get a good mix. But most of em are nothing @ all.
So here is my next barrage of questions for everyone
1) Im learning to beatmatch on some pretty crazy records. like Hard Trance, hard house, crazy nearly HHC style n like that. Should I go get something slower with a more distinct bassline ie THUMP THUMP THUMP
as opposed to the
THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP
that im going with now?
2) Does the fact that im workin on Belt drive make a difference? Im sure it does, cuz the plate stops, and then it starts and then everthing is WAY off. So will it make a huge difference?
3) Its a pair of Sony 6000 whatever headphones..I cant hear distinct bass lines in it. Will that make my life harder?
4) Will my habit of EQ work (which I will always have to do for work, there is no pitch control) make it harder for me to learn? Like breaking a 'bad' habit?
Grrrr..I was mixing, but I got sooooo frustrated. So now im here being pissed off with a sore back, I need that new table so Im not bending over soo much!!!! |

there's three of us over at j_spot's house right now...
now i'm the one being all mad at myself.. actually, for learning how to beatmatch with vynil for the first time, i feel like i'm not doing that bad... i just need some tables of my own now... :(
that way i can do this all the time, not just when i come over to j_spot's house |
