So,

I don't know if any of you were aware of this, but this week the former Governor of Illinois, George Ryan (Republican) was indicted on several dozen offfenses regarding the license for bribes scandal in which, during his tenure as Secretary of State in the 1990's, people who were unqualified were given CDL licenses (commercial driver's license...it allows you to drive semi-trucks) in exchange for campaign contributions to Ryan.

Here is a link to a couple stories on it:

I find it rather interesting that in a state widely recognized as having one of the most powerful Democratic political machines ever (they used to "vote early and vote often" when the original Mayor Daley was in office in the 1960s) now has a giant Republican political machine scandal. But finding that interesting mainly comes from my living in the state. Hell we were all betting he would be indicted within a week after he left office in January.

For the reason on the title. Last year at this time, Gov. Ryan commuted all the death sentences in the state to life in prison after he had placed a morotorium on executions a couple years before. The death penalty system in Illinois has been pretty flawed for several years and the Gov (though a lot of people think it was a ploy to get a legacy outside of the corrruption stuff) decided to keep anyone who was innocent from being executed it was best to commute all the sentences. For that blanket commutation he was nominated for the Nobel Peace prize.

I just thought a little change of pace from the Bush/Israel/Michael Moore/quizzes might be interesting :D
