How To get decent melodies?

Hi,

Since the search function is down, and I have tried to look manually after a thread like this, I found out I could just start one..

I Wondered if anyone had some tips & ideas how to make good melodies, and since Im producing breaks/prog house, Im not talking about thoose big trance melodies.. but just little tiny ones, that adds movement to my track. Kinda working a bit in the background

I read about notes & chords etc, and now what C Major etc. is, but i still cant get it right..

Please share all info you got, especially if you are using Reason.. what kinda FX etc. sounds good on melodies and on.

Greetings,

Do you have a midikeyboard?

What I do is that I play notes on the keyboard, just play around and then I find something that sounds kinda cool. Record it to the sequencer and then edit what I played in the sequencer's editor. It works for me

not a bad idea, my melodies got better when I got a keyboard.. even though I do a lot of computer editing on my melodies ;)

why don't u try making them yourself. If your to lazy to make your own melodies than you'll never make it as an artist. that should be the most enjoyable part of producing, is coming up with something great.

I'd recommend getting a keyboard with at least 2 octaves on it, then reading up on some of the basic scales (c->b major/minor). Once you know what notes make up a certain key, play around with those notes on your keyboard.

Yes, I would go one step further and get a 3 octave at least. My melodies and accompaniments got better when I got my JP. As for finding a melody, what I do is find a chord progression first and then the melody just seems to come naturally after this. Try a four chord progression and then change maybe the third or fourth chord on the second pass by adding a ninth or something to that effect.

And if lost you with that last part, then get to reading. For the last 6 months I've been studying theory and it wasn't easy, but it did pay off. Sometimes you really do have to work hard. I'm not saying it's impossible to come up with good melodies with a mouse, but I really don't see how you could come up with accompaniment (chord progression) with one...unless you're just playing the tonic.

scav, check out the post i just made in this thread:

http://www.tranceaddict.com/forums/...threadid=149214

it directly answers your question. i use reason also and do not use a midi-keyboard, nor do i think one is necessary for top notch stuff. the song i posted in that thread has some small melodies, i am into the same style as you and not the big dramatic trance riffs (although there are actually one or 2 in the song i posted in that thread, because i just learned how to make melodies and was trying some different things)... i only like it deep. i dug your short track posted in the music forum, maybe we can collab on something. i am kind of a newb to but am getting better.
