Well... with all this talk about nuclear weapons and the "evils" that may make them (Iran and North Korea) this past year, what do people have to say about Israel's very secretive weapons program?

They say its for "peaceful" and "safe" means

I think this is bull...but im sure you guys arent surprised by my thoughts.

When will nations learn that making NUCLEAR weapons will only make it possible for a NUCLEAR war to occur?

Ahhh...but when one nation makes a nuclear weapon, it may take another nuclear weapon to be made for war not to occur. One word: Deterrence. It did work for 40 years you know...

Deterrence is like Pre-emptive strikes....they are both lame excuses. What happens if one is used... You know there will be retaliation...and then annihilation.

"deterrence" almost cost this world their first Nuclear war during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Remember, The US also had weapons in Turkey facing Moscow at the time.

By having these weapons, there is more of a chance that more death will be a result of its destruction.

I agree with Cryrus. It's simple. If one country decides to make the impetuous decision of setting off one of those annihilative weapons, the world is doomed to be in ruins, for it will only lead to more being set off.

What happened to the good old days when the weapons of choice were swords and spears? :p

Israel's nuclear weapons program had a very practical purpose and was essentially a necessity in the 60's/70's. After all, there was no other alternative at a time when Arab WMD programs in Egypt and Syria were accelerating at a rapid pace and when US support against Arab/Soviet aggression were tenuous at best. At either rate, Israel's current stockpile is rather meaningless in her current situation. It's defensive practicality has been rendered impotent with Israel's growing legitimacy and military dominance in the region. In the end however, I see no reason why Israel should not have its stockpile of weapons whilst Egypt and Syria maintain huge stockpiles of chemical weaponry. As a matter of fact, I see no reason why Egypt cannot maintain its stockpile of weaponry and Syria to a lesser degree. It is highly unlikely that either state would authorize a release of weaponry to terrorists in hte current world climate. And Israel poses less of a risk than say India or Pakistan with respects to safeguarding its nuclear weaponry. Ultimately the only state that was the big unknown in the region was Iraq. No other state would dare utilize wmds as a means of accomplishing anything. So in the end, every side can complain about each other's WMDs but it doesn't really mean much of anything ... it's pure jockeying for posiition in the political arena.

Pfft.

All you need for deterrence to fail is one crazed leader who's too blind to realize the full implications of launching a nuclear (noo-keh-lohr) strike.

We've been so close to complete annihilation on so many different occasions, it's chilling.:nervous:

I agree with most of what Occ said although i think the way in which Israel are immune to weapons inspections and their treatment of Moderchai Vanunu etc is a bit... if Israel were more open to weapons inspections etc, to show the world their wasn't such high double standards i don't think there would be as much fuss. Irans tactical manoevure in saing that they would remove their weapons if israel did was good tactics but didnt mean much. I think libya are on teh right track though

that made sense last night. sleep depravation :whip:
